Monster of the Day #1064

OK, I’m sure I’ve used some, or most, or all of these. We’ll just call it a holiday tradition then.

Merry Christmas, everyone, to you and all your loved ones.

Stills from Godzilla Meets Santa ?

  • The Rev.

I’ve seen the first four, but the last two are new to me. Those are great. I especially like Godzilla shopping with Kemular and Gyango.

Merry Christmas to you all, my friends!

  • Food

I’ve never seen these stills before. They’re fantastic!

Merry Christmas to Ken and everybody here at Jabootu!

  • Gamera977

Wow, those are awesome, Merry Christmas to all my friends here!

Btw: I’m working today so I looked up the Mexican ‘Santa Claus’ Ken reviewed on YouTube and watched it. Gee Friggin’ Whiz, I couldn’t agree with Ken more, this thing is absolutely bat-guano insane- the guys who made it must have been snorting Santa’s happy powder…

MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALL! God bless each and every one of you, and have a fantastic 2015!

    Merry Christmas!

  • GalaxyJane

The RiffTrax guys did a live riff of that one a few weeks ago, it doesn’t get any less crazy, no matter how many times I see it.

  • Gamera977

Cool thanks for the head’s up! The MST3K version of the movie is up on YouTube too but I just watched the vanilla version. Sometimes I like to do my own riffing!

  • Merry Christmas, Ken!

  • Eric Hinkle

Is this the one with the devil Pitch trying to tempt children into evil? I’d rather watch that than the wretched film I saw at the relations’ yesterday. Something with cute talking puppies trying to save Christmas, and oh merciful Jabootu the musical numbers! This made ‘My Little Pony’ look like a study in sophisticated script writing.

    “Godzilla Saves Christmas”

  • Eric Hinkle

Merry Christmas all! BTW, just saw the last of the the Hobbit movies today. I won’t spil anything but I think I’ve been hanging around you peoplle too long — all through it I was thinking things like ‘So, Alfrid is the Odious Comic Relief’ and so forth.

On the other hand, this year coming we’re getting remakes of The Terminator, Mad Max, and Earthquake (with The Rock, no less), all of which look like they’ve got fifty times the SFX budgets of the originals. Oh yes, and ‘Jurassic World, the new Jurassic Park movie, in which a genetically engineered hybrid super-dinosaur breaks loose and sets the dinosaurs loose on the parkgoers, with much dinosaur-eating-humans action to ensue.

  • The Rev.

Santa Claus is great; I watched it with Joel and the ‘bots this year, and just today watched them take on Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Those Mexican kids’ movies are nuts. I am eternally grateful to Sandy for showing the one with Red Riding Hood and Tom Thumb at T-Fest years ago; it was glorious. I think I sold it in my write-up by saying something like, “Midget-powered dragon shooting real fire at kids.” Seriously, I shouldn’t have to say anything else, although there is sooooo much more to enjoy.

  • Belated Merry Christmas to all!

  • GalaxyJane

I’ve seen it all three ways. Honestly that one is just so plain weird it doesn’t need any help, it pretty much riffs itself. I do like their sense of humor though, and it was fun to see it (simulcast) in a theater with a bunch of like-minded nuts. Took the kids too and they had a great time.

  • Gamera977

Now that sounds cool! It is truly ‘so bad it’s good’. Only problem I had with it was for a Mexican movie of that era not enough wrestling! I mean Santa has Merlin and Vulcan working for him, why not El Santa too? Him putting Pitch in the sleeper hold would have rocked!

  • Gamera977

Funny the second Hobbit movie put me to sleep but I loved this one. I think mainly because it was mostly ‘The Battle of the Five Armies’ without much room for extraneous stuff thrown in. Still the whole dwarf/elf romance thing made me giggle every time it came up. And Alfrid was odious alright, guess we can’t make fun of fat people anymore but give the guy a fuzzy unibrow and bad teeth and let fly. Overall I think it may have redeemed the trilogy, after all it gave me something I’ve wanted to see for some time here- a dwarven army kicking ass!!!

Probably going to skip most if not all the remakes, last one I saw was the remake of ‘Clash of the Titans’ and it was pretty much pointless.

  • Eric Hinkle

I agree on most eery point you made here. Especially the Dwarven army staging a beatdown on everyone, with Dain the Mad Scot as their leader (riding a giant boar, no less! I suppose if the supplies ran low the Dwarves could eat their mounts) and cavalry on giant goats.

For that matter I like how they showed Azog doing things like having orders relayed by flags, maintaining a reserve, and holding half his army back (the Gundabad goblins) and only sending them in once all enemy forces were engaged and unable to retreat. I’m stunned to think that I may have seen actual WORKABLE military tactics in a Hollywood movie.

  • rtpoeman

To be fair, prior to that movie, Mexico had *NO* tradition of Santa Claus. It was as if a lesser American film studio of the era was trying to explain the concept of a “luchador” to people who were only vaguely aware that there was such a thing as professional wrestling (and when the fillm studio itself was equally unaware).

For a different Christmas movie, try “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka” (Russia, 1965). It’s based on a story by Nikolai Gogol, and takes place in a small village on Christmas night.

  • Gamera977

Yeah i loved the Dwarven cavalry! And the fact that the orcs did use tactics rather than being a rampaging mob made the victory all that much more epic.
Plus there were several effective IMHO little moments like Bilbo’s acorn and Saruman’s promise to take care of the One Ring.

  • Eric Hinkle

Yeah, it had a lot of great moments — yet it feels to me like this film can be described as ‘had lots of great moments’ and not ‘is a great film’. Ah well, that’s probably just my inner Tolkien fanboy complaining.

  • Gamera977

Yeah lots of great moments and plenty of ‘what the hell were they thinking’ moments too…
