Monster of the Day #1016

You can never have too many cool tree monsters. I know this looks surprisingly great for a sword and sandal film, but it was designed and built by Carlos Rambaldi, so there you go.

  • Gamera977

Don’t blow on the giant mutant killer dandelion, you’ll only spread it’s giant mutant killer seeds everywhere.

  • bgbear_rnh

Looks like it leaves a trail of dead horses in its wake.

  • David Fullam

    Loved this one. Very Lovecraftian.

  • Rock Baker

Yeah, this was a good one!

There was a surprising number of these mechanical monsters that popped up in this genre. I think this one was only out-done by that giant sea monster in HERCULES AND THE PRINCESS OF TROY.

  • David Fullam

    That one rocked!

  • Ken_Begg

Ha, that was the competition to end the week! I’ll save it for the future “Sword & Sandal Week II.”

  • Beckoning Chasm

This one always showed up in the “Sons of Hercules” credits (“The mighty sons of Hercules…”) and it always looked cool. Sadly, it was not featured in any of the SoH films that were in the “50 Sci Fi Classics” box.

  • Eric Hinkle

Which Hercules movie was this? Looks like ‘Hercules meets the Dunwich Horror’. And yes, that is one great monster.

  • Flangepart

I might have this puppy. Gotta look it up.
Yer average cyclops has a big tactical problem That one big eye just has ‘poke me’ written all over it.
Just once I’d like to see a cyclops with a monocle.

  • The Rev.

I think I’ve seen this one once, and I want to say this was actually their version of Medusa. However, the name escapes me.

  • Rock Baker

MEDUSA AGAINST THE SON OF HERCULES, if I correctly remember the wording of the title.

  • Rock Baker

It was. Provided I remember the correct wording, the title was MEDUSA AGAINST THE SON OF HERCULES. One of the better sword and sandals, as I recall.

  • Eric Hinkle

Yow, that’s Medusa in that picture? She rivals the Hammer Gorgon and Harryhausen’s Medusa for one of the best serpent-haired abominations I’ve ever seen!

  • Rodford Smith

I think it was modeled after the tiny water creature which was named for the Greek monster.

For some reason, it also reminds me of the monster from the _Space 1999_ episode “Dragon’s Domain.”

  • Gamera977

It does look a lot like a hydra, which is a real fresh water creature about a centimeter long as well as a fantasy monster. Medusa is the scientific name for a member of the jellyfish family as well.

  • The Rev.

I was going to post that yesterday, but connection issues prevented me. I’m glad someone else got to it, though; it does have a resemblance to a hydra.
