Monster of the Day #975

Just as goofy as Blaisdell’s, but it lacks his magic. The man was just an artist.

    But, it is IN COLOR!

I think I mentioned yesterday that I probably saw the Buchanan versions before the BW originals. I was trying to remeber why I was not sure. It is because we did not have a color TV until around 1972.

Blaisdell’s looks like he spent time and money on it. Buchanan’s looks like he spent ten seconds in a thrift store, and then another twenty seconds rooting in the garbage.

To be fair, the budget for Buchanan’s TV sci-fi remake movies, including color film stock, was only $25,000 (!) a picture, or even a bit less. On the other hand, Blaisdell often had budgets amounting to literally hundreds of dollars. But again, Blaisdell had an amazing individual esthetic. He’s one of those guys like Big Daddy Roth that just had something going.

The aliens blew their budget for injectopods during the 50s failed invasion and scraped together what they could for the 60s attack.

Now they cannot even afford to fuel their spaceships.

  • Flangepart

Hummm…looks like the title beastie from Poe’s THE GOLD BUG.
    Uh…I’ll just leave now…

I was thinking, a Razzies like award should be “The Larry Buchanan Life Time Achievement Award” and this is what it should look like.

  • Rock Baker

Another major difference was that Blaisdell’s control devices moved quite a bit. They fluttered like bats (sometimes in an amazingly life-like manner), and the one seen in yesterday’s scene was breathing.

The Injecto-pods were really stiff, on the other hand. They never looked alive, but rather like halloween decorations being tossed around.

Interestingly, the Space Bats used by the LOBSTER MAN FROM MARS seemed to be a sort of cross between the two earlier units. I really hope that’s what tomorrow’s MOTD is!

One time, my TV Guide said the Saturday Afternoon horror flick was going to be Island of Lost Souls. They played this instead…I AND SAT THROUGH THE WHOLE DAMNED THING!

  • Flangepart

    Or ‘Life FORM Achievement award.’

  • zombiewhacker

True, but the SCTV spoof of Zontar makes Larry Buchanan’s version look like Avatar.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Well, they probably got the cabbage rolls from Mrs. Vilviacchi. And the coffee.
