Monster of the Day #963

I have always liked blob monsters, so here’s one from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. This is from the first season, given that it’s in black and white, and hence the season with the fewest monsters. I think this prop was later reused as a space brain or something in one of the three remaining color seasons.

Can it play tennis and have a master plan to win at Wimbledon by turning everyone into Scotsmen?

Does it DO anything, or just lie there and be blob-like ?

I think it’s more of a plastic bag monster than a blob monster. In one of its later incarnations on the show it had mind control powers.

I’m fairly sure it consumed a guest star.
So it’s Blobs, is it? Wonder which day we get Caltiki, T.I.M.
Always thought blobs were scary because, as the songs say, ‘It creeps, it crawls, it glides, it slides, along the floor-right through the door…’ and knowing any Tiiiiiny hole might let it in…scary!

The original Blob movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. One of the few monster movie that kept me awake at night after watching it. Even so I was sure to watch it whenever it was broadcast. The lure of an afternoon monster movie was just too strong to resist.

I think the reason the original Blob was so scary was that it was one of the very few monsters that was completely silent. The ants from “Them” or the silicates from “Island of Terror” could never sneak up on anyone (and the remake Blob mewled like a kitten), but the Blob…you’d never know if it was right behind you.

    Like it is right now.

That and the thought of being instantly digested. Ugh.

The remake of THE BLOB had very little in connection to it’s namesake. It’s more a remake of THE CRAZIES, with Caltiki as a guest star.

Your point on silent monsters is well-taken, and I brought it to mind when watching KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS again. In most killer bug movies, the creatures are assigned some sort of weird call or screech or sound effect. KINGDOM doesn’t do that, and is yet another element in the film’s favor.

Already done Caltiki. Indeed, I’m not sure there are enough blob monsters left for me to to do. I was just noting a preference for blobs. Or any sort of non-sentient monster, really. Always liked that sort of thing.

Well, you weren’t INSTANTLY digested. You had the time to feel it eating you…
