Monster of the Day #866

Duh, Gee, Tennessee.

Let’s make this another Ultra Q week, as inspired by Sandy’s review of an episode. I’ll write up my thoughts on the show and append them to Sandy’s review and repost the whole things as a Nugget later this week.

This fellow was one of only a few monsters to return on Ultra Q, and also later on the subsequent Ultraman show. As with the other monsters on this show, I couldn’t stop grabbing still. Note the neat way they keep him shrouded in shadows initially, using his lit eyes for menace. The design is actually kind of goofy, a bat-walrus. Of course, he has a range weapon, in this case generating a freezing tornado-like vortex that we see spiraling several characters to their doom. Watching ‘bodies’ fatally smack into a floating multi-ton vehicle is actually kind of wince-inducing.

In Japan, human life is really expendable. More so in Kids shows! Yeesh!

Peguila didn’t actually fight Ultraman, or any of his brethren. He showed up in that Ultra Galaxy show, albeit as a corpse. Thus far, “Ultra Q” has been his only (notable) appearance.

However, they did modify the suit and make him into Chandora for the original Ultraman. I can understand the confusion, though, as all they did was stick ears on the costume. Anyhow, Chandora was in episode 8; he’s the poor dope that Red King maims near the beginning. We watched that episode at T-Fest 2012, I believe.

    Which leads me into this:

    1. When are you posting that write-up, Ken? Were there any further problems with it?

    2. I found my 2013 notes. Actually, Dara did. I apparently took them with me on my Christmas trip home, foolishly thinking I’d have free time to work on them. I left them in my bag and forgot they were there until she used the bag for a recent weekend trip out of town. So I can finally get back to work on those.

Sorry, Rev, I’m been laid low by that same cold I had at Sandy’s ; it’s still lingering. I’ve got the photos and everything, though, so I was hoping to get it up tonight.

As iconic as Peguila was, it’s amazing he never returned in another Ultra series.

To be fair (and it’s a major reason the show is so great), the tones of the episodes are pretty varied. Not all of them, by any means, feature such deaths. And there are episodes that are explicitly kiddie shows–Sandy reviewed one such–and they are completely berserk.

  • Gamera977

Gee he reminds me of the head of the dragon from ‘The Neverending Story’ slapped on the bastard Gyaos’ body.

  • Rock Baker

For all it’s goofiness, this is pretty swell!

I’m actually kind of glad Ken is sometimes slow to post material. I need to make an alteration to my Video Cheese piece on PREHISTORIC WOMEN. Keep an eye out for that, Ken!

  • The Rev.

Normally I’d agree, but it took me so long to get this to him that I’m antsy to finally see it up. Which isn’t his fault, of course. Plus I went over it a few times, again due to how long it took, so I’d lit to think it’s all right after all that. Hopefully everyone enjoys it. It’s easily my angriest piece to date…except at the very end.

  • The Rev.

Good lord, still sick?! I wouldn’t have said anything if I had known. I’m glad I didn’t catch this superbug you picked up! Get better already!

  • Ken_Begg

It’s kind of come and gone, moving around from head to chest and bad again. I might have to bite the bullet and get some antibiotics.

  • Flangepart

That may be true, but for myself, it’s been a case of ‘did I just see that?’ for most of the unedited shows I got to see in the original version.

All I can get of the Sandy Peterson review of Ultra Q is the title. Where’s the rest of it ?
