Monster of the Day #850

Our first inclination is to be a smart ass and note that this is a ‘harmless’ herbivore. On the other hand, hippos kill more people than any other animal in Africa.

On the third hand, you’d think they’d leave you alone if you left them alone, so again, it’s pretty much on Turok here.

So how did an Indian find himself transported back into prehistoric times?

  • Ken_Begg

    According to Wikipedia:

The Western Publishing version of Turok was a pre-Columbian Native American (identified as Mandan in the first issue, on page 21 and 32 of Dell Four Color #596) who, along with his brother Andar, became trapped in an isolated valley populated by dinosaurs, which they refer to in general as “hoppers”, “monsters” and more often than not beginning in Dell issue number 9, page 35 as “honkers”, as well as by their most obvious characteristics (Tyrannosaurs are called “Runners”, Pterosaurs are called “Flyers”, Velociraptors are “Screamers”, Plesiosaurs are “Sea Demons”, Triceratops are “Rammers”, etc.). The Du Bois stories involve Turok and Andar seeking a way out.

The “harmless” herbivore trope for dinosaurs always cracks me up. There are lots of dangerous herbivores in today’s world. Like you said though, just best to avoid them, it is not like they will hunt you down.

This guy looks like he would scare a rhino.

  • Eric Hinkle

I wonder if that valley was any relation to the ‘Valley of Gwangi’? And I’m guessing this is one of the older Turok covers here? I used to get these comics whenever I could find them. I’m guessing that they’ve been out of print for years now.

  • Gamera977

I’m assuming ‘Turok’ isn’t a real American Indian name? I thought maybe it was something spelled backwards but ‘Korut’ doesn’t work either. Is it just made up?

  • Ericb

Maybe some day Turok will meet up with Kirok and they will rock the joint.

  • Ericb

The problem with herbivores is that they are paranoid about predators and usually find out if you’ve invaded their personal space before you do.

  • Ken_Begg

There were released as part of Dark Horse’s fabulous Archives line. You might be able to access these volumes through your local library.

    I AM KI-SHAT!!!!

Who said that a creature that eats plants isn’t ill-tempered?

At any rate, this one fantastic cover! I’ve never seen this one before, but it’s perfect!

  • Eric Hinkle

Thanks! I’ll have to see about getting them via interlibrary loan. I’d rather see these on the shelves than the latest tiresome ‘best seller’ from the top of the NY Times list.

  • Eric Hinkle

‘Who said that a creature that eats plants isn’t ill-tempered? ‘

Someone who never had to deal with an angry bull or cow or horse or goose or buffalo or moose or…

  • Flangepart

Go on, say Koala…you know ya want to…

  • Jamie B.

You are making me so happy with these Turok covers!

  • Jamie B.

They ran a few different issues where they would “almost” make it out, but something would keep it from happening.

I remember one where they discovered some large fish that had come from their land and tried to find where the river was flowing from. Turned out it was actually fish eggs that were making the trip. Oh well, better luck next time.

  • The Rev.

And their super-deadly relative the drop bear.

    GILLIGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rodford Smith

The most dangerous African large animal for photographers is the rhinoceros. It spots this big, gleaming eye (the camera lens) staring at it, and charges, just to be safe.

  • Marsden

I know no one will probably notice a post 10 days after the fact, but on Land of the Lost, Spike the triceratops was one of the more dangerous dinosaurs because he was very territorial and would charge if he was annoyed. The Marshalls kept away from him as much as the Allosaur, Big Alice, and Grumpy, the T Rex. And this is the original series. The first 2 seasons were excellent, highly recommended. 3rd season was awful. I didn’t watch the 90s remake series, but that movie from 09 was really bad, like Godzilla 98 bad. Just wrong.
Beside Turok, I like the other Dell/Gold key guys like Magnus and Solar, did they have painted covers?

  • Rock Baker

Oh, the third season wasn’t a total waste or anything. While nothing as good as the first two seasons, Jack was pretty cool, and the flame-spitting dimetrodon was just wonderful.
