Monster of the Day #782

Not part of last week’s gang, but I wouldn’t want to leave them out. Except for Booberry, I must have eaten more of this than any of the other monster cereals. I don’t really remember it, but I know I had all the plastic figures (which I think Sandy COMPLETELY ripped-off for his Cthulhu game) and the refrigerator magnets as well.

How old is this cereal? They *didn’t* get their own Saturday morning cartoon series. Their commercials, though, were narrated by Burgess Meredith (!).

  • Flangepart

Wow…that art is just so…underground comic.

  • Ericb

I ate tons of this stuff when it first came out in a futile endeavor to collect all the little plastic figures. It was always disappointing when I got one that I already had (they must have packed 10 Boss Mosses for every 1 Grumble). When I was almost there the damn company changed to the bloody magnets. Anyway it was basically Capn’ Crunch in a different shape so it wasn’t too painful.

  • Ken_Begg

Check the commercials on YouTube. Underground indeed. Makes me think they were going at the munchie market, if you know what I mean. Freakies, indeed.

  • Ken_Begg

Thanks for the confirmation, that was basically how I remembered it tasting.

  • Marsden

    I don’t remember that.
I love that it’s made by Purina, do they even still make people food? I thought they were only in the pet food business.

  • Eric Hinkle

Ye gods, I’d forgotten this stuff ever existed until now. I think it stopped appearing on the shelves before I entered 4th grade or so. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Mister Begg!

And I could SWEAR there used to be a storybook sent to kids who got a few box tops of this cereal together.

  • Flangepart

To which I can only say…Duuuude!

  • Flangepart

Ah…That may explain the food in high school cafeteria…(Rimshot)

  • Rock Baker

Pop was big on this stuff. It was he who pointed my brother and I to those commercials on YouTube. A wonderful thing, YouTube.

  • GalaxyJane

Never heard of the stuff myself, but Mr. GJ came in and saw this over my shoulder and got very excited (enough so that the kids came running to see what the fuss was about), apparently he collected the toys.

  • MrTongoRad

Yeah- the drawings always reminded me of my old Plop magazines (although that probably wasn’t all that ‘underground’, to tell the truth).

  • Ken_Begg

That is because you are a young flow-ah, ma dear.

  • The Rev.

I guess I am too because this is new to me.

  • GalaxyJane

Yeah, that’s definitely what it is. I had my kids in junior high and was only old enough to drink last year, any evidence to the contrary is a government conspiracy.

Actually it looks like it was discontinued when I was 3, thank you Wikipedia.

  • The Rev.

Ah, I’m not that much younger than GJ then; I was -1 when it was discontinued.
