I have no plans on seeing the movie or reading the books but I do enjoy reading bad reviews of it for some reason.

Japanese original? Hardly. Calling Battle Royal original is just more internet snobbery. People have been killing each other ever since the planet become too crowded at a population of four. People have been organizing it since at least the Romans, and have been writing about it since the invention of the written word.

Hunger Games and Battle Royal share a story seed (children forced to kill each other by the government) and that's it. The execution, the politics, the intended audience, and everything else is vastly different. The Hunger Games is no more a rip-off of Battle Royal than Battle Royal is a ripoff of The Pest.

Besides, the Hunger Games is more The Running Man crossed with The Lottery than anything.

That being said, I have to agree with people complaining about shaky-cam. That crap needs to stop.

Daughter who read the books (and liked them) and saw the movie said it was a decent flick. Actually, I liked the comment about cute black kid = good, white guys with spiked hair = evil. And yes, who doesn't believe the shaky cam needs to die?
