And Flange says...not bad!

Random thoughts as they come to me...
Who thought of the name Stacker Penticost? Sounds like a pallet loader at a Bible factory.

How did the hero survive being at best, a half mile about a nuke when his mech went ka-boomy? I know, I know, but even a hero's death exemption has to fail SOMETIME!

And allowing for water pressure, just how big what that first nuke blast, span wise?

Also...now the Congleypoop did they keep contact with them at that depth? Could have showed them dropping a bobber with a long cable under it. I'm just sayin'...

Coolest humans in the film, Mako, The little girl who played her younger self, Stacker, herc and Hannibel.

Great mechs. But A simple mech sized Ka-bar knife and battle ax would come in REAL handy...also a 500mm hunting rifle.

Favorite line. "No heartbeat."

Sooo...more as it comes to me.
You?

I was in no hurry to watch the film, but I was pleased when I did. A fun throw-back to the 80's piloted robot genre. Not spectacular, but not bad. Didn't come close to doing what it was trying to do, in terms of capturing the flavor of older Japanese monster movies, but that's mostly the fault of the digital effects and constantly moving camera.

Quite a bit of suspension of disbelief is required for a film like this, so just play along and figure they can stay in communication across dimensional warps!

Weren't they though the dimensional barrier when the nuke detonated? I assumed that the blast stopped at the barrier.

Other than that- yeah massive suspension of disbelief was required for this film.

I mean- is the best way to take over a world sending kaiju though rather than just some sort of killer pandemic or a horde of smaller critters?

Still I loved it beginning to end. Great soundtrack that makes you want to go kick some alien booty, no idiot agenda thrown in your face, likable if somewhat flat characters. I picked up the Blu-Ray but have been watching horror movies the last few weeks- will be watching it again after Halloween.

> Maybe they've seen that come back around to bite them on other conquests? Still, there is the threat of an autonomous monster weapon going rogue...unless the Kaiju are just as 'piloted' as the Mecha. That one beastie seemed pretty curious about Stryker, when the EMP blast locked it up.<

>Yeah. There was one throw away line about pollution almost Terraforming the planet for the aliens, but that was all.

A thing I'd included in my own Kaiju related writing, is about the economics. The film did a nice job in passing in mentioning that. Religious responses would be unavoidable, and Hannibal making a profit off the kaiju seems obvious.
Imagine how badly the world economy was effected by the danger to shipping that kaiju cause, let alone damage to First World infrastructure and banking...yeesh! Thats a story in it's self, if anyone could make it watchable. Monty Python could...:)<

Yeah, we all knew I was gonna weigh in on this, right?

There was no way in hell I was going to miss this while in theaters, of course, and I managed to get Chelsea to come with me to see this. We both had a great time. The characters were, for the most part, not overly original, and the story was a bit sparse, although the details were nicely done, if that makes sense. There were enough hints of the world and its past that I really wanted to see more of it (not to mention the criminally-underused Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon). The monster stuff, though...goddamn. I'm rarely a fan of CG, but this worked for me. They made sure to give the monsters heft and have them move purposely to keep up the illusion of giant beasts and robots. The designs were pretty nifty, and I liked that there seemed to be echoes or nods to various kaiju in them (tell me that one wasn't a modern Zigra!) The fights were very well-done; in fact, the battle for Hong Kong has quickly moved itself into my short list of best giant monster throw-downs. I felt like a kid again at times.

This was a rare case where the style carried me past the lapses in substance, and overall I really enjoyed myself. If the new Godzilla movie entertains me as much as this did, I'll be satisfied.

If the Godzilla movie surpasses it, you'll no doubt hear my delighted shrieking, regardless of how far you are from Texas.

I thought the characters worked well, because they were intended to "just" be archetypes.

Also, that scene where Gypsy Danger is dragging the ship behind it to use as the world's most awesome club was a joy to behold.

Heh. Rule of cool, baby!
Ya know, I don't think even that many CH-47 Chinooks could lift Gypsy Danger. And the likely crash potential with that many choppers flying in such a throttle sensitive formation...Oh, yeah- they need a solid one piece lifting platform.
But hey, this comes from thinking too much...

Personally I think making the characters archetypes worked here- it allowed them to be quickly drawn so we could get on with the monster-mashing good parts!

There is a comic book that serves as background for the movie, I haven't read it and can't attest to how good it is.

And I liked the last couple of Gojira/Godzilla movies: Giant Monsters All Out Attack, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, Tokyo: SOS better- not much better but better. And 'Gamera vs. Irys' is still my all time favorite Kaiju movie.

Yeah, the 90's Gamera flicks were way cool. Such an improvement over the originals (Well, good movie wise...) and the music worked well too.

I like the Profs. The American and English types fit the story as you said.

I'd like a sequal, but that don't seem likely. But if the comic book adaptation does well, it might stand with the best of the Godzilla series from IDW.
