Monster of the Day #762

Maybe it’s because I look a lot more like the chap in the back then those in the front, but this cover rubs me the wrong way somehow.

Good job impressing Sally there by shooting her mom in the face. I guess it is good to take care of any future mother in law issues up front though.

More environmental suits should come with short skirts though – I heartily approve!

I do think it’s hilarious how bored Captain Future looks. Another day at the office, I guess.

  • Flangepart

Well, ya face blast one alien menace, ya face blasted ’em all…

  • Gamera977

Boredom? I thought it was resolute defiance!!! ;)

  • Eric Hinkle

Hey, he’s Captain Future, AKA Doc Savage with a ray-gun. He does stuff like this 2-3 times a week.

And boy how I miss the innocently goofy SF like this.

  • Eric Hinkle

If that’s her mom, then the Captain better remember — Sally’s probably gonna end up looking like that in another decade or so.

  • Luke Blanchard

I’ve not read a Captain Future story. Most of them were written by Edmond Hamilton, including, reportedly, the one above. He was one of the early pulp SF writers, and he also did much writing for DC comics, including for the Superman and Batman titles. He was the husband of the screenwriter Leigh Brackett, who also wrote much SF.

It looks to me like he’s performing laser surgery on its eye, which is kind of him. You jsut can’t be much of an interstellar menace in glasses.

If there’s somethin’ strange in your neighborhood

    Who ya gonna call?

  • Rock Baker

To echo Sandra, my first impression is that we’re seeing a futuristic eye exam and the good doctor is letting the patient hold his nurse’s hand for comfort. But he’s getting too nervous, and squeezing her too hard, and so Doc’s also holding her hand to comfort HER! All that said, it’s a great cover. Spectacular artwork.

Hamilton did a lot of the early Legion of Super=Heroes, too.

  • Petoht

I can’t help but thinking that if he’s actually in the future (and not time-warped to when this was written), shouldn’t he be called Captain Present? I mean, he wouldn’t view himself as being in the future.

“Aw, look at you two lovebirds…”
    ZAP!”
    “OW! WHAT THE HELL?!”
