Futurama…of the Future!

From a Matt Groening interview about the Simpson movie opening next week:

“Matt Groening also briefly spoke about his other series Futurama, which will b returning in a big way later this year. “We’re doing four straight-to-DVD ‘Futurama’ movies and then new episodes on Comedy Central starting in 2008. The first DVD for ‘Futurama’ will be out for the holidays.”

Last I had heard, it was DTV movies *or* new episode. This is simply awesome.

I’ve really been looking forward to this; however, I hope the production team does a classier take with the DVD pieces than MacFarlane took with Family Guy’s “movie”. I’m pretty sure they will, but I’ve been burned before so I’ll still be concerned (albeit slightly).

  • Here’s hoping they’re better than The Simpsons Movie, which sure looks like it’s going to be a case of too little, too late.

I kind of got the impression Matt had bailed on The Simpsons around the time Futurama started; it certainly seemed like that’s where his attention was. It was a far superior show back then and it’s light years better than what The Simpsons has been since the late 90’s IMO. I tend to think the new movies will be up to expectations. Man, I hope so. I had no idea they were even discussing this so it’s a great surprise.

Haven’t we heard this a dozen or so times already?

Still I guess it would be nice if it happened.

BTW, I think the reason Futurama is more highly regarded than the Simpsons is simply because the latter show has been deluting its strengths for years now.

It’s like the Rolling Stones. If they’d broken up thirty years ago, they’d be in the pantheon of the gods. Now they’re just tired old men.

A case of “how can we miss you if you don’t go away?”

  • “Haven’t we heard this a dozen or so times already?”

Not for a while, which has led me to suspect the revival had been derailed, and certainly not in this amount of detail. This is the first time I’d heard that they were planning *four* DTV movies, that plans now included *both* DTV material *and* new TV episodes, or that the first DVD movie would actually be out this year, or that CC will begin broadcasting new shows in 2008.

That’s all great news, and that’s why I mentioned it.

I think someone missed out on the opportunity here. I think Futurama actually lends itself better to a big screen adaptation than the Simpsons. The Simpsons has more name recognition, but Futurama is more cosmic in scope and could actually benefit from the bigger special effects budget.

I’m also not of the mind that Futurama is superior to the Simpsons. I love both shows, and Futurama is the more consistent series, but the Simpsons just has too many ground-breaking and educational moments for me. I just tend to ignore that anything after season 10 exists and continue to view Springfield with blissful, ignorant nostalgia. :)

The Simpsons Movie is a money grab, pure and simple. I’ll be really interested to see what kind of numbers it does- will it live up to the hype or are people happy to tune in for free every week but maybe not quite so ready to part with $8 plus to see a big episode at the multiplex…

I just hope that the quality of the new Futurama episodes is up to the standard set in the past. With the big gap since the last episode there is the worry the creators might have lost the knack. Family Guy certainly wasn’t as good when it came back (How good it was to begin with a matter for argument for many I’m sure). Still, fingers crossed- it’d be great to see Futurama back in all its glory.
