Monster of the Day #645

Damn, I miss the days when they made movies where one flick would cover an entire week of Monster of the Days.

I *think* this is the same guy under different lighting; maybe it’s a publicity still rather than an image from the movie? Either way, bless the men who actually constructed these fabulous beasties.

  • Flangepart

“We need to get a bigger GUN!”
    Hummm…stumped on this one.

  • The Rev.

I don’t know what this is either, but I really need to. This giant fish-monster is great and I want to see it in action.

  • bgbear_rogerh

In the second photo he looks like he is ordering a Crabbie Patty.

  • Flangepart

And the lighting make the ‘rock wall’ in the foreground look a lot more plastic.

  • Cullen Waters

Wow is he a neat guy!

  • SteveWD

‘Warlords of Atlantis’, right? Isn’t that Troy…um, Doug McClure to the right on the log?

  • Yes, WARLORDS OF ATLANTIS (1978). If you haven’t seen it, seek it out, it’s fantastic! Doug McClure is back fighting rubber monsters! A nice meaty role for Shane Rimmer! And a young John Ratzenberger during his action movie phase! And, as noted, some wonderful monsters!

And yes, the second shot is indeed a publicity still.

  • SteveWD

Does it get much better than this, Land That Time Forgot, and At the Earths Core? For some reason I was never a big fan of People That Time Forgot.

  • Ken_Begg

I think the reason is that it’s pretty blah. It might have suffered from following in the wake of the far superior LTTF.

That film is incredibly fun (and will have its own week of MoD sometime), but my strongest impression of it revolves around sitting in a theater as a kid and gasping at that absolutely gorgeous shot of the ice-covered U-Boat approaching that rocky passage. Short, perfect images like that are one reason cinema has the power it does.

  • SteveWD

Derek Meddings miniatures are responsible for a bunch of those perfect images…..in my mind at least.

  • Indeed, check out his rocket launch sequence from JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN!

I believe Meddings worked on PEOPLE TIME FORGOT as well (another juicy role for Shane Rimmer). Check out the miniature airplane sequences, particularly the stuff at the climax! The film isn’t as great as LAND, but I’d stop short of writing it off completely. It’s a fun matinee epic in it’s own right.

  • Greenhornet

    I have two captions:
Second frame to first: “Heyn keep it down! Some of us have to work tomorrow!”
    OR
Guy in first frame: “I summon BIGGER FISH!”
    Second frame: “GRAAARRR!!”

  • Cullen Waters

“And a young John Ratzenberger during his action movie phase!”

Okay, now I have to see it. (Like there was any doubt before…)

  • On the other hand, I do have a theory as to why it falls short of it’s fellows: Doug McClure is hardly in it.

  • The Rev.

Okay, I’ve heard of this, but somehow didn’t know it was another Doug McClure vs. rubber monsters movie. That settles it; I’m finding this ASAP.

  • Yes, both pics are of the same creature, which is named the Mogdaan; the lower pic is from a publicity still.
