Warner Brothers TV DVD chat…

The invaluable Home Theater Forum had another of their chats with Warner Brothers, this time with reps from their TV DVD department.  Here’s a condensed run-down of what was discussed:

Knot’s Landing Season 1 didn’t sell that well last year, so there are no current plans to release the remaining 12 (! ) seasons.

There will be another 60 cartoon Looney Tunes set, the 5th, released during the holiday season this year.

Perfect Strangers S1 may come out next year.

No plans for a season set of Static Shock, which did not sell well on ‘episodic’ releases.  Personally, I think consumers just feel ripped off when Warners released episode discs and then puts out partially redundant season sets.  They may be misinterpreting the data of poor episodic disc sales, and should just skip right to the season sets.

The Zeta Project cartoon is under evaluation for a future release.

The Super Friends: Galactic Guardians and Filmation Aquaman cartoons are due in 2008.  The Super Friends:  Legendary Powers Super Powers series is due out this year.

Tiny Toons might get a 2008 release.

Disappointment was offered for the release of the shorter syndicated cuts of the show Mama’s Family.  (!!)  Reps indicate they don’t own the rights to the original master cuts, only the syndicated ones.  So no adjusted re-release of M’sF season 1 is planned.

Alice is being evaluated.

A third Tom & Jerry Spotlight collection is due this fall, the complete set of theatrical Droopy cartoons is due out next week.

Everwood releases (past season one, which is out) are being stymied by prohibitively high music rights issues.  If it does get released, it may be that they’ll have to substitute the original songs.  It’s amazing to me that they haven’t figured out a way to deal with these sorts of issues yet.  I know Chris Isaak’s Showtime series is being held up because of music rights issues, and 80% of the music on the show was his.

No plans for Falcon’s Crest.

Dallas season 7 out in July.

No current plans for Night Court, Growing Pains or Life Goes On.

A question was asked about what the evaluation process entailed, and why some shows only get the first season released:  “We always release series with the full intention and hope of releasing the entire series on DVD. Unfortunately, sales don’t always warrant this. A lot goes into the evaluation of potential series – looking at sales of prior similar series…consumer research…costs to master and clear music – both of which can be substantial and prohibitive for release. we also try to get a sense of how avid and passionate the fan base is. All that said – if a series is profitable for release, we will release it and continue to release it. it is not an easy evaluation or decision. We ponder it carefully. Unfortunately, there is often a drop off in sales from season 1 to subsequent seasons on classic titles. This is also a major issue for classic TV series. Not necessarily the same issue with shows currently airing.”

No plans for Step by Step, Hogan Family, Mr. Cooper.  Family Matters being considered, but there are music rights issues.  Music clearance costs for Homefront are also “very, very high,” and the outlook is not very encouraging.

Second season of Robot Chicken to be announced soon.

No plans for a second season of Huckleberry Hound.  An announcement will be made shortly on “one” of the following shows:  The Smurfs, Pac Man, and The Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Hour.  I assume Smurfs, but who knows.

No plans for Brimstone, Opposite Sex, Run of the House, Bucky O’Hare or Fish Police.  (Seriously?  Fish Police?)  Nor for animated TV movie “Flight of the Dragons.”

No plans for British show Spaced by Shaun of the Dead / Hot Fuzz guys.

Shows not justifying physical release might be made available for paid download, but music clearances would still be an issue.

Don’t own the rights for the Twin Peaks pilot movie.

No plans for Freddy’s Nightmares.

Third Watch maybe for 2008.

Second and final season of F-Troop out soon.  Many older shows, ’50s and ’60s, are largely on hold, though, because of limited sales.

Scarecrow and Mrs. King on “consideration list.”

First season of old cartoon Wait Til Your Father Gets Home (I remember that!  Paul Lynde voiced the nutzo right-wing neighbor) out in June.

First seasons of CHIPS and Welcome Back, Kotter also out in June.  Also in June, further Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain sets.

No plans for old Lace mini-series, or its sequel.

Alvin and the Chipmonks being looked at.

Shazam and Quick Draw McGraw have music clearance issues.

No further seasons of Murphy Brown, since first season sales sucked.

No plans for Superboy.

No plans for The Goodies, dammit.

No plans for Maximum Bob.

No current plans for Courtship of Eddie’s Father, Please Don’t Eat the Daisies or Chico and the Man.

Plans moving ahead for Man From UNCLE.

Thundarr the Barbarian will be “looked at.”

Roots: The Next Generation may be announced soon.

’70s TV movies like Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark are being evaluated, but only that.  Possibility of TV movies ‘camp’ sets coming out if Warners’ upcoming theatrical Camp sets do well.  (The tail end of that is my interpretation.)

The ’80s versions of The Jetsons and Jonny Quest being evaluated, as are Pebbles and Bam Bam.  Meanwhile, the Filmation ’80s Batman (the one with Bat Mite) and Superman cartoons are being released soon.

On original DTV animated movies, the Superman Doomsday movie will be animated in the now standard Bruce Timm style, but the New Frontiers movie will resembled the comic book art.  The Teen Titans Judas Contract movie wasn’t mentioned, but surely it won’t resemble the anime style of the TV cartoon series.

No plans for Head of the Class or Our House.

Eight is Enough being considered.

Further permutations of Scooby Doo likely to hit DVD.

One guy asked for more Cult Camp Collections. Remember, the first four sets are out soon! Buy them or at least rent them all if you want more. Do it for Jabootu!

Powerpuff Girls first season out in July.

“Looking at” Herculoids (PLEASE!!) and Sealab 2020.

News on Josie and the Pussycats coming soon.

No plans for Maverick season sets (dammit), nor that quasi-animated Huck Finn series.

Captain Planet “is a zero” when it comes to DVD sets.  This is as it should be, but sucks for me!

Silverhawk (?) is being “strongly considered.”

China Beach release being stymied by music clearance issues.

OC Season 4 out this year, and complete series set being planned.

News on further Veronica Mars sets coming soon.

I am a little surprised about Murphy Brown; when I was growing up it was the show that all the critics talked about endlessly as being so good and so important, even before the Dan Quayle contretemps.

I wonder how popular China beach really is; I used to watch it because Dana Delany was my dream girl, but I can’t recall the plots or anything.

  • hk6909

Could they mean maybe Silverhawks, with an s? Its sister series, Thundercats, has been released on DVD by Warner Bros.

  • Earl Allison

Yeah, they are doing the same piecemeal release for the new “Superman and the Legion of Super Heroes” series. A disc with 4 episodes is due out later this year.

Agreed, just give me the seasonal sets! Ditto for ALL the various Superfriends series!

    Take it and run

  • Hasimir Fenring

    Speaking of Captain Planet,

…I’ll have to vow to return some day to menace the Planeteers anew…

    does this sound familiar, Ken?

Please save us from ‘Earth’s Greatest Champion’!

Further permutations of Scooby Doo likely to hit DVD.

    Any that are animated?

  • Ken HPoJ

    That must be it. Thanks!

  • sardu

I’m kind of shocked over the apathy concerning the release of Night Court. That was a popular show that seems like it would have great DVD demographics…

I do remember Wait Till (sic) our Father Gets Home and I can’t imagine that it has aged very well. That’s a pretty obscure show to release.

  • sardu

typo- meant Wait Till Your Father Gets Home of course.

  • Paul

Wow, I think it’s a crime that the States still don’t get Spaced, especially with the cult success over there of Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, as the humour is very similar. I’m also mystified as to how CHiPS is judged OK to release, but not Freddy’s Nightmare or Maverick…

  • Brad

Any word on whether they’ll ever release a DVD for The Jury? I only saw a few episodes, and wouldn’t you know it, they pulled the series right after I’d really gotten into it. Besides, Barry Levinson produced, Blue Man Group did the music, and it was a lot better than Law and Order Trial by Jury was. It deserved a lot better than it got.

  • The Rev. D.D.

Man, if they put out Thundarr and the Herculoids I’ll plotz. And then immediately purchase them.

Has anyone picked up the first Animaniacs season collection…and found themselves disappointed? I remembered loving that show, and now watching it again…there is a LOT of suck. Pinky and the Brain are classic, the little things are great (Katy Kaboom, Mime Time, Good Idea Bad Idea), but most of the rest of it…even the Animaniacs themselves…really aren’t that funny. Slappy and Buttons & Mindy have their moments, as do the Warners, but wow…I’ve just been really surprised by the good to bad ratio. The lady of the house has expressed similar feelings, and she too loved the show back in the day. It’s kinda sad.

At least now I can console myself with the Powerpuff Girls…

  • Rev. —

That’s interesting. I remember Animaniacs very fondly too. I must just be remembering the better bits, like the elaborate song numbers.

Maverick is not really being considered because black & white show sales figures are sketchy. If the upcoming Gunsmoke season one box sells well, it might encourage more b&w western stuff, but westerns also aren’t really popular these days. (Although a lot of them come out on DVD, anyway.) I’d certainly like to see the years with James Garner come out, before Roger Moore took his place, but ironically the ’80s Maverick series (great theme song!) might actually have a better chance of hitting shelves, if only because it’s in color.

I wonder which studio owns Manimal and Misfits of Science, by the way.

  • PCachu

My wife will not be content until they do at least one season set for Histeria. She loved that show.

  • Terrahawk

If you’re desperate, you can watch some shows online here.

    http://www.tv-links.co.uk/

TV and movie companies are going really facing a huge problem with things like this. I believe they are going to have to look at something like the AOLVideo model where you can watch some old TV shows with only 3-4 15 to 30 second commercials. The option for newer shows is to build in the technology to replace items in the show with product placements. When the show first airs the person may be drinking a Pepsi. Later in the online version, it’s a Coke.

Back on topic, how can rights for the music not have been determined ahead of time? High priced, worthless attorneys….

  • Ken HPoJ

Re: Captain Planet. Well, I pretty much have given up on reviewing off video tape, because it’s such a pain. That why I’ve always really wanted the show to come out on disc. It would have made a nice replacement when I ran out of Challenge of the Superfriends episodes.

Maybe I can find somebody to convert my tapes to DVD, or get gray market copies or something.

  • Ken HPoJ

Re: Music rights, well, you can see this for older shows, because who knew? Modern stuff like Everwood? It makes me shake my head.

Note that music issues arise with shows like Shazam!, so apparently we’re not just talking songs or stuff, but actual background music.

  • Terrahawk

My vague understanding is that court cases have determined that people involved with the production of TV shows are accorded monetary rights regardless off medium. Now does that mean they have to renegotiate for each new medium or is it some flat percentage/rate? It seems like it would be easy to establish some basic percentage formula to cover this for all time. They had better get their act together and figure something out because Internet + Broadband is going to kill them if they don’t.

  • The Rev. D.D.

    Ken–

I’ve come to the same conclusion. We were talking about our disappointment, and I came to the realization that all my fond memories of the show were of only a couple of things…Pinky and the Brain and the little things I mentioned before. And, as you mentioned, a couple of songs and other things the Warners did. But I didn’t bother remembering any of the rest of it…and I think I see why now. Either it sucked royally (Goodfeathers, Rita & Runt) or wasn’t really that funny for the most part (the rest of it). It’s kind of disheartening.
Makes me wonder if they’ll someday release Freakazoid and I’ll go through the same thing.
At least P&TB have indeed proved their mousy worth.

  • Yeah, I remember Freakazoid as being pretty funny. I remember walking in halfway through a hysterical parody of Jonny Quest, and of course in the endlessly rerun episodes that followed, I never caught that one show again.

Thank goodness for the Venture Bros., then.

  • The Rev. D.D.

I recall Ricardo Montalban as a recurring villain on Freakazoid. Total blast.
I’m not usually big on running gags, but the one with that cop showing up right before Freak’d head out to stop some villain and ask if he wanted to do some random thing first always cracked me up.

Freak: “I have to stop him before he destroys the city!”
Cop: *pops up* “Hey Freakazoid…wanna get a mint?”
    Freak: “DO I!?!”

The Venture Bros. is about the last bastion of goodness on Cartoon Network anymore. It’s great in its own right, but bearing a massive love for and knowledge of Jonny Quest just adds to it, ’cause I’m pretty sure I’m picking up things people unfamiliar with JQ aren’t. THIS is the Adult Swim cartoon they should make a movie of…

  • Ken Begg

Venture Bros. would make a far better movie, if only because their show is more-plot driven. ATHF is much less linear, and thus not quite as translatable to a 90 minute format.

I do dearly love the Venture Bros. And like all potentially great shows, the increasing depth with which the large supporting cast is filled in indicates that the program’s best days are still before it. The Simpons really hit its stride when they got to the point that nearly anyone in Springfield could have a great episode built around them.

  • The Rev. D.D.

I have no problems with ATHF and its non-linearity. It’s just become a lot less funny, at least to me. The newer episodes don’t hold up to the old ones. So I don’t imagine the movie is much better. Still, I suppose I should actually SEE it before passing judgment.
I just think TVB would be better as a movie because it’s better, period. The only Adult Swim cartoons that match it are the Murphy-era Sealab 2021 (which is the best stuff the AS people have done, IMHO) and Space Ghost:CTC. But the linear vs. nonlinear comparison is valid as well.
Interesting comparison to Homer & Co. I think you may be on to something there. More characters have been added and are fleshed out. And if it does indeed go from strength to strength, well…we’re the ones who benefit.

  • The Rev. D.D.

Whoops! How’d I not list Harvey Birdman: AAL in there with the best of Adult Swim? My bad!
As his boss might say, “Ha HAAAAAAAA….forgetful!”
