Audiences Assemble!

I guess there’s some sort of superhero movie coming out today. My prediction? When all is said and done, it will make over ONE…MILLION…DOLLARS.

I remember having a literally disorienting, ‘I’m in a dream’ feeling when I saw the teaser at the end of Iron Man 2, the one that featured a quick glimpse of Thor’s hammer Mjolner. I was like, “Is this really happening?!” It was definitely bizarre, like seeing a dream I’d had since I was a tot coming true.

Now I’m much older and jaded, so I’ll tell you what, movie. Give me a really good ten minutes where the rest of the Avengers fight the Hulk, with a couple of minutes featuring Hulk vs. Thor, and I’ll consider myself satisfied and all the rest will be gravy. But please, don’t let the action scenes run for half an hour, either.

Anyway, this is an open thread for anyone who sees it this weekend and wants to give a thumb’s up or down or other spoiler-free observations. I’d suggest if anyone is interested to start a forum thread on the film meant solely for people who have seen the film, and hence can discuss the film at length without fear of complaints.

Have a good weekend, folks.

I have seen it, and have already given it a 10/10 rating on IMDb and added it to my top 100 list. It lived up to my high expectations, and even surpassed them in some cases – Mark Ruffalo was a definite improvement on Edward Norton. Great script, great character development, great effects, and while the climactic fight does last a good half hour, I’d say the circumstances warranted it.

It’s already my favorite movie of all time. Absolutely amazing and worth all the praise it’s getting. I agree with Toby. Mark Ruffalo did an excellent job and I’d love to see a Hulk movie with him.

  •  Saw it at Midnight. IT RULES!!!

Ken:  I’d say you’ll be satisfied.  It’s fantastic.

Well, you won’t get your first request. But the second? Yep.

I’m pretty sure the last 45 minutes were all action though, but I didn’t really notice the time while on the rollercoaster.

OK, wasn’t planning to see it this soon. However, it turned out it was playing at the Pickwick Theater, a 1920’s movie palace that at 1,400 seats (although they are upgrading them and so they have bare sections currently) is the biggest theater in Chicagoland. Indeed, there was a 5:00 show . Since the Pickwick is, oh, about 300 feet from where I work, I decided I could make that show. And since it’s not a mall theater, and a 5:00 show, it wasn’t packed with obnoxious teens.

Plus I sat in the 2nd row, so I didn’t have to worry about people in front of me opening their cell phones every five minutes.

Anyway, it’s spectacular. Really much better than I thought it would be, even with all the raves. Every single scene was good and did something. Hats off to Joss Wheden, who really pulled this off, but also to the Marvel people like producer Kevin Feige who has been assembling this package since the first Iron Man movie. It’s amazing how well all the pieces fit together.

I saw it midnight on Thursday.  I thought it was pretty good, but I still prefer the 1978 version.

I wish they had chosen a different title.  When I hear THE AVENGERS I think of John Steed and Mrs Emma Peel.

  • Ken_Begg

To be fair, the superhero Avengers were on the scene first. But yes, for non-comic readers, I can see the confusion.

  • Toby Clark

Actually, no, the Avengers TV series started in early 1961, with Cathy Gale arriving a year later and Emma Peel in 1965. The first Avengers comic book came out  September 1963.

  • Ken_Begg

If you’re British, that is correct. However, the TV show The Avengers was not seen in the States until 1966, with Emma Peel being the first distaff Avenger we Yanks saw.

Thor! Ant-Man! Hulk! Iron-Man!  I can’t wait to see that movie!

Hate to be the Bearer, my friend, but no Ant-Man (or Wasp).

Of course, if they were going purely by the first issue of the comic, there would be no Cap either, and NOBODY wants that.
