Sci-Fi Saturday on TCM…

TCM will be running five sci-fi movies in a row tonight, starting with Close Encounters appearing in their regular The Essentials slot. All times CST:

7:00 PM Close Encounters of the Third Kind
9:30 Roller Ball (The real one, of course)
11:45 Logan’s Run
2:00 Westworld
3:30 Soylent Green

What’s amazing, looking at that list, is that only one of these has been remade so far. Of course, Jurassic Park was just Westworld with dinosaurs rather than robots.

Also playing at 5:00 this afternoon (again, CST), the original and *far* superior Cape Fear.

  • Pop once read a proposal that SOYLENT GREEN, Z.P.G., and LOGAN’S RUN could be considered an unofficial trilogy. That the events of SOYLENT GREEN could lead to those of Z.P.G., and the little boy in Z.P.G. might be the old man in LOGAN’S RUN. An interesting thought, no?

I really need to see Z.P.G.

No, really, you don’t,  A real snoozer of a “message” movie. And worse, one where no-one is likable enough for you to give a damn what happens to them.

  • Last version I saw was a black and white S8 print Pop wound up with. It wasn’t gangbusters or anything, but I’ve seen worse.

Sounds perfect! Once in a while, I like to watch a Deep Message film, even if the guys who made it are idiots.
