Monsters at the Portage…

Do they always have a “one of these doesn’t belong” movies in these marathons?

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, I think John (the guy who runs it) is always hoping to grab more of a hipster / nerd cult audience thing with that last movie slot. Don’t think they’ve had much success with that. Personally, I think they’re best shot is with guys of our ilk bringing their kids in. And admittedly, they’ve focused more on going for that audience lately, what with the early showings and such.

Still, Assault on Precinct 13 is a pretty great movie, and either way, you can’t lose offering six movies for ten bucks. Watch one or two and you get your money’s worth; watch more and it’s all gravy.

AoP13 is a terrific movie, but it’s definitely not kid-friendly.  It does seem like an odd choice, since the rest of the line-up looks wonderfully family-friendly, a good night out for everyone.  Then, “Whoops, past your bedtime, let’s go, hurry up!”

  • Ken_Begg

Well, it is being run at 9:15, so presumably the kiddies would be tucked away by then anyway.

I remember years ago, though, when they ran the R rated Tales from the Crypt at like 7:30 and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger after 9:00, and I was like, “well, that makes no sense at all.”

I’m going to be moving up to Chicago soon, and it makes me sad that the Portage will probably be closed before I can participate in any of these fun events.

  • Ken_Begg

Scott–That’s great! I can’t speak to the long-term prospects of the theater–a church is trying to buy it–but the lease for the current owners extends through 2015, so hopefully they’ll be in business for at least most of that time.

Various factions are trying to keep things going as they are, as well, so hopefully they’ll prevail.

I hate to be That Guy, but…

“All ghouls & warlocks witch’s welcome too!”

This makes no damn sense.  What’s a “warlocks witch” and what thing belonging to them is welcome?  Either they need a copy editor, or they’re going too far with spoofing the hyperventilating movie posters of old.
