Best Christmas Gift Ever!

This original art piece from Jabootu’s resident cartoonist, Rock Baker. (I detect a Charles Addams influence here; especially with Ro-Man). The original is much bigger; bigger even than I kept as a scan, because the file was humongous. However, I do have a bigger version of it scanned, as soon as I figure out where I can place it that I can link to it, I will.

Rock, you’re the best! This exceeded my wildest expectations. Thanks more than I say.

    “Best Christmas Gift Ever!”

You’ll shoot your eye out Ken.

    (BTW awesome Rock)

  • Ericb

Is that they Uninvited cat in front of the Tabanga?

  • The Rev.

Ericb: It took me a minute, but yes, that’s what that cat is. Look closely and you’ll see the parasite hanging out of its mouth with a little drink glass.

The only one I’m not certian on is that thing to the left of the Giant Claw. I’m guessing it’s the Bigfoot from Curse of Bigfoot but am unsure.

    Pretty sweet drawing.

  • Rock Baker

Thanks very much, Ken, I’m glad you like it! I had a lot of fun drawing it!

Yeah, that’s supposed to be the Uninvited cat. I’ve not seen the movie, but I knew he had to be in there.

  • Yes, I’m pretty sure that’s the Curse of Bigfoot ‘Bigfoot,’ too. The two teeth is a give-away.

Rock’s amazing art survives the transition to the smaller size pretty well, but the Uninvited Cat/Rat is sadly diminished. Again, I’ll try to find somewhere to host the larger version and link to it. (I’ll probably also make a mug out of it at Cafe Press so I can enjoy it on a daily basis.)

  • Rock Baker

Thanks, gang! Yeah, that is supposed to be (Curse of) Bigfoot. I drew it from memory, but all I really had to grab on to was that it look as ratty as possible!

  • Rock, it’s a pretty fine likeness, although other than looking moth-eaten, he’s pretty much a generic furry beast. Again, I think the twin teeth was a very nice touch.

The Uninvited Cat/Rat is probably my favorite, although you really captured everyone. That Green Slime is fab!

  • Ericb

Hah! I just caught Chesty Morgan, awesome.

  • Ericb

    Is it in Bronson Canyon?

  • roger h

    Holiday Host: “another martini Ro-man?”

Ro-Man: “I cannot – yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do “must” and “cannot” meet? Yet I must – but I cannot!”

Holiday Host: “You know, if you are not the designated driver, you really need to relax and enjoy the party”

Ro-Man: Yes! To be like the hu-man! To laugh! Feel! Want! Why are these things not in the plan?

(Later, after a couple of more martinis)
Ro-Man: “What are you doing alone, girl-child?”

  • That would make sense; both Ro-Man and Gor lived in the same cave.

  • roger h

    That was a crowded cave.

  • Rock Baker

Actually, this is the other end of that cave in Bronson Canyon. Notice that it opens behind the Hollywood sign, from where Jabootu watches over all the doings and dealing of movieland. Not also, the clawed tentacles to reach deep into every brach of showbiz….

  • The Rev.

RE: Bigfoot: I didn’t think about the teeth; what convinced me what it was were the eyes, which are pretty spot-on. Even now as I look at it, I see what must be that slit in the one eye, which seals the deal.

Well, that and Rock saying that’s what it is.

The Slime is great, but my favorite is the Giant Claw. He just looks so happy to be there.

  • BeckoningChasm

That’s one awesome drawing. Thanks, Rock, for the artistry and thanks, Ken, for sharing.

  • TongoRad

To me The Giant Claw looks like it’s had its dignity restored.

Great job through and through, Rock!

  • Rock Baker

Thank you all for your very kind words. A Merry Christmas to all, and a very happy New Year!

  • Guy Hoyle

That’s really fantastic! The first thing I noticed, besides Ro-Man, was Chesty. I started having “Double Agent 73” flashbacks.

  • Gamera

    Wow, Rock that’s fantastic!!!

    Merry Christmas guys and gals.

  • GalaxyJane

Now that is truly a thing of beauty.

    Merry Christmas all!

  • Petoht

Great work, Rock. And I agree with Ken here… when I saw Ro-man, my thoughts went instantly to Charles Addams.

  • Rock Baker

Strange. As far as I’m aware, Addams wasn’t an influence. I didn’t knowingly go after any certain style, though, I was mostly just trying to figure out what characters would fit in what space. I can’t tell you how happy I am that so many have enjoyed it. It’s really made my Christmas!

  • Rock — Looking at Ro-Man, he just *looks* like a Chas Addams character when drawn like that. The pose and the hair work also suggest Addams, I thought, although I’m sure it’s a coincidence.

Not a bad guy to be compare to, though.

  • Reed

Good stuff! Although I honestly think that the real Chesty Morgan is, if anything, actually larger than the cartoon portrayal of her. Larger and, um, riding a lot lower, if you know what I’m saying and I think you do.

Immediately after finishing the toast they all did the Jilla-Jalla-Jellyfish!

  • Rock Baker

The jellyfish man! Oh, how could I have missed that one?!

As for how Chesty looks, well, I draw beautiful women more than anything else so I don’t have the knack for drawing, shall we say “under-average” ones. Other than the trailer for Deadly Weapons, I’ve not been subjected to the sight of Miss Morgan. What sells it is the hideous clothing, I think (a better looking woman could probably pull off two different fur patterns, but add a lava-lamp jacket and all bets are off)!

  • Elizabeth

Oh my god this fucking RULES.

You should have someone color a big hi-rez version of this and then give it away as a donation gift, like I’ve seen a lot of webcomics do.

And you should also give me one for free.
