Things you learn on the Internet…

From Macleans.ca [the website of a Canadian newsweekly magazine]:

“Maddox is a master at a certain kind of writing — the combination of mock anger and fake pomposity — that has flourished on the Web: the deliberately bizarre, floridly written rant that attracts attention for dealing with subjects that are too weird or obscure for “conventional” publications. These online writers like to give an absurd spin to mainstream subjects; Maddox devoted an essay to explaining the best methods of suicide, including “Eat a tub full of beans” and “Headbutt the sidewalk.” Other times, they deal with obscure pop culture: Canadian Ken Begg, of jabootu.com, writes tens of thousands of words analyzing bad movies like Pia Zadora’s The Lonely Lady…”

Of course, there was always the editorial written following a blog comment I wrote somewhere:

A response to one Ken Begg, Catholic Martyr.”

(I should note the the author of this editorial seems to have somewhat randomly assigned to me many political and social opinions that I do not hold, and that I don’t believe were inherent in what I wrote.)

Ken Begg, Catholic Canadian!

I hardly think you reviews can be considered “rants.” They are more like good natured ribbing. I hate rants and wouldn’t read them if they were.

  • I think Mr. Brown’s piece, which is…rather free form, speaks for itself.

The fact that, since I defended the legal right of people to call for a boycott of Dogma (which was the topic, if I remember correctly), came to mean in Mr. Brown’s mind that I must be Catholic… I think that right there about sums things up.

  • You know you’re getting famous when folks in the media just start making stuff up about you.

In my not entirely unfounded opinion, it is more rare when the news media fails to make up stuff. Every news article I have ever been even tangentially involved in has been so full of blatantly misrepresented and often diametrically opposed to the truth “facts” that I have stopped reading or watching it entirely.

Just be happy they only missed by about 300 miles (or rather 500 km).

    So, Chicago isn’t in Canada?

Damn you for failing me again, public school!

  • Man, they owe you a fruit basket and an apology for mentioning you in the same paragraph as Maddox.

  • Dang, I read that guy (who wrote for McLeans)’s blog all the time!
