God bless us all, everyone

I wish a very Merry (and safe) Christmas to all of you. Thank you all, sincerely, for staying around despite my giving anyone very little reason to do so. And an extra thank you to those who participate in our (roughly) bi-weekly Watch Parties. I’ve enjoyed those greatly. Next one will be the week after New Year’s.

For the two people who care, Bofuri season 2 starts on Wednesday Jan 11th. (Or at least it broadcasts in Japan starting that date; I think it will simulcast the same day here.) Also, just reminder that the 11th and 12th will be the days that Fathom Events will be screening the recent Shin Ultraman in theaters.

  • Merry Christmas!

    Merry Christmas to all!!!

Yeah, the watch parties have been a blast even if you did threaten me with Travola Ken… ;) A definite highlight of the year. If at AA meetings people can get together and talk about their drinking problem why shouldn’t we get together to talk about our obsession with awful movies?

Power is out here, I’m typing this on the work computer where we have a backup generator. Thankfully I have a wood stove at home so I won’t be freezing even if it may be a little boring without any power.

    Merry Christmas, everyone.

  • kgb_san_diego

    Merry Christmas all!!!

And ken, you know I am the other one. January 11 — squee!!!!

  • Eric Hinkle

Merry Christmas all and I hope you’re having better weather then we are.

  • Gamera977

Good news! Found out though the power was out at work it was fine at home.

In even more good news my copy of ‘Ship of Monsters’ and my Atlantis repop of the old Aurora Wolfman model figure kit I’d ordered were waiting for me- so they’re going under the tree as presents for myself…

  • Ken_Begg

Glad things turned out so well, Gamera. Here as well the weather was nasty but not so nasty as originally predicted. The cold and vicious wind chills were fairly correct, but the snow as far less (which is fine) than at one point was predicted. I think the news now overhypes storms in advance because 1) it draws lots of views (duh), and 2) is the weather is worse than predicated, people get pissed and probably bombard the station with complaints, but if it’s better than predicted people are just happy. So they have two built-in motives for going to the most outsized predictions.

So it’s been pretty cold, but my power and thus my heat stayed on, and my pipes didn’t freeze. Crazily, temps should rise to like 50 degrees by the end of the week.

  • Ken_Begg

It’s been a long three years, right? But it’s finally here! Plus after it’s over I have like four light novels I can then read. So it’s all good. BTW, feel free to email with your Bofuri thoughts if you’d like. We can bask in the warm glow together.

  • Eric Hinkle

Glad to hear you didn’t get hit with another ‘arctic vortex’ like we did locally a few years ago. Got cold enough around here last night — temps of 5 degrees Fahrenheit plus winds of 20-30 MPH. Not fun.

  • Eric Hinkle

I just heard of a Chinese movie that may be right up Jabootu’s alley, The Wandering Earth. It’s set in a future where the Sun is about to go red giant ahead of schedule. But not to worry! Superior Chinese science is used to turn the entire planet Earth into a space ship and send it rocketing off into space to look for a new sun.

I will say that it sounds like one wild film.

  • Gamera977

It was on Netflix a couple years ago. Not a bad movie, I wouldn’t really call it that good either though. It’s mostly a mixture of a family drama about a cosmonaut family having to deal with the crisis and a kinda dull action film.

Personally I’d say it’s worth a watch but I haven’t any real desire to see it again.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, I’m glad you’re okay Ken and everyone else. Sounds about right about the weather forecasts.

Seems to be a lot of people hit hard by the arctic vortex this year and several areas around still out of power. One family within a mile of work had their home burn down yesterday. Hell of a way to spend Christmas. I have a space heater but I don’t trust the damn thing further than I can throw it, I only run it when I’m around to watch it.

  • Gamera977

So did anyone get bad movies or related items for Christmas? As I stated I got ‘Ship of Monsters’ and the boxed set of the Chinese ‘Mr. Vampire’ movies plus a repop of the old ’60s Aurora Lon Chaney Jr. Wolfman model kit.

  • Eric Hinkle

Ach, here I was hoping it’d focus around the crazy science aspect.

  • Ken_Begg

You could always watch Gorath, which has the same basic plot with the bonus of an utterly extraneous giant Walrus. Not to mention impressive and lovable practical effects and model work.

The Dalek Invasion of Earth and the film version (with Peter Cushing as a human Doctor Who) Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 also revolve around a similar concept, only here the Daleks are intending to steal the Earth.

  • Dorothy Cobb

    I got ‘Witchery’ and ‘Ghosthouse.’

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ve seen the Cushing Who films and Gorath, though unfortunately it was, I think, the AIP version which cut the walrus out. What were they thinking?

It’ll probably sound unkind but with The Wandering Earth I also remember some things I’ve heard and read about how untrustworthy Chinese engineering can get, and I wonder how long before ‘ChiCom Earth’ ended up spiraling into the Sun or the like.

  • Eric Hinkle

Wow, you did great. The best I did monster-wise was a Dover Publications collection of Bob Howard’s Conan stories.

  • Gamera977

Um, bit of a spoiler but Earth does almost fall into Jupiter in the film.

The Chinese do get help with the engineering from the Russians. I’m not sure that’s an improvement…..

  • Belated Merry Christmas to all! We were out of touch on the day itself. And I hang out here because I love each and one of you filthy animals!

Seriously, I have made some of the best friends I could have through this site. And you’ll let me wax poetic on the advantages of Abby over Blackenstein, which everyone here tunes out of in about 3.6 seconds.

Hope all had a safe, happy, fattening holiday.

  • Won’t lie, I was thrilled to be on the tropics and not in Virginia this past week. Heck, when we hit dirt this morning it was still just 13 at my house, which is damned well bitter enough, although it had made it up to freezing by the time I actually got home.

  • That last bit sounds about right, given what has recently been revealed about the general maintenance of Russian tech. Although honestly we found out the same thing at the end of the cold war, all had been maiskorovka. Why we thought New Russia would be any different, given that it’s baked in the culture, is a mystery for the ages.

  • No luck, my kids got me good stuff, a complete run of M*A*S*H including the movie (which I love) and nice versions of the first 3 Bonds, which I may =be happy to have on physical edia given their “problematic content”

  • Ken_Begg

13 degrees! You babies. We were dreaming of 13 degrees, and it wasn’t even as cold as it gets up here. I guess you and I will both see what February here is like. You might be dreaming of 13 again too.

  • Ken_Begg

We don’t just tune out, we know what the heck you’re talking about and might actually push back in a way that fosters a 30 minute conversation on the topic, with other people running over to add their own two cents.

One reason we still congregate here like this is because where else do we find people that we can casually name drop The Flame Barrier (or even Beast from 20,000 Fathoms) and have people know what we’re on about?
