Actually great movies on Amazon Prime…

Going back to our original Cinema Bell Curve idea, and aware that an occasional great movie compliments the junk we all love. Here’s some great films available for viewing on Amazon Prime. I already mentioned the terrific ’70s crime/hostage movie The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.

The French Connection is a deserved Best Picture Winner back when that used to mean something. Gene Hackman is phenomenal, and it features of the two or three best car chases in movie history.

Sunset Boulevard with Gloria Holden and William Holden is one of the most iconic films ever made.

Akira Kurosawa’s Ran. ‘Nuff said.

Fight Club wasn’t really my bag, but it surely ranks as an all time classic for a lot of people.

The Quiet Man Perhaps the most beloved of the John Ford/John Wayne movies. You can only gasp at seeing John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara together, two people so beautiful it’s hard to believe.

Vertigo and Rear Window C’mon, do I even need to sell these movies?

Chinatown Like French Connection, who of the greatest films of the last great era for Hollywood.

Donovan’s Reef Unfortunately Hatari isn’t available on Prime, but this big messy amiable lovable comedy starring John Wayne and Lee Marvin is.

My Man Godfrey My all time favorite romantic comedy, starring William Powell and Carol Lombard. I LOVE this movie.

Any favorites of your own to nominate?

  • Just to throw out a couple of names just to hide the fact I watch nothing but Horror and Sci Fi Flicks, Prime has Charade, a great little thriller with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn and The Lady Vanishes, a rather charming Alfred Hitchcock film. It also has Richard Pryor’s Brewster’s Millions, which I saw decades ago and still remember liking it.

  • Rodford Smith

Speaking of car chases, _Bullitt_ has been on TV a few times, recently.
