Off to Texas Open Thread…

Off to Texas, folks. Feel free to post on whatever here until I get back next mid-week. Have a great one!

Hope everyone has a safe and fun trip!!!

BTW: Ken, did you ever say anything about Sandy Petersen’s YouTube channel and maybe I missed it? Anyway I blundered across ‘Sandy of Cthulhu’ the other day and have been watching a bunch of his videos.

In other news I actually ordered a Blu-Ray copy of ‘Battlefield Earth’. Does this call for an intervention? Should I be on medication because I’d spend good money on….. this???

  • Beckoning Chasm

There are some interesting things in Battlefield Earth. You have to look hard for them, because they’re surrounded by a sea of garbage, but they are there.

  • Look, dude, I’ve been debating buying a Cathy’s Curse Blu Ray. You’re good. You’re reasonably sane. Or at least as reasonably sane as any of us here are.

  • Gamera977

CW, you should go for it! Personally I consider ‘BE’ to be hilarious. It’s probably not the attitude Hubbard and Travolta were aiming for though. I intend to put it on my DVD shelf next to ‘Galaxy Quest’ and ‘SpaceBalls’.

I watch Sandy’s channel myself, and I love it.

  • No. I shouldn’t. I really, really shouldn’t.

    But I am.

    There’s a director’s cut.

    A director’s cut.

Most of Facebook may be a waste of time, but I love some of the entries made on the Kolchak the Night Stalker fan group I belong to. They keep sending Carl after other 70’s horror movie monsters. I.e., Carl runs into Blacula, he runs into the Gargoyles from the 1972 movie, he meets the Tall Man from Phantasm, etc.

Probably the prize winner though was Kolchak gets sent to Japan to cover the Cherry Blossom Festival and Godzilla attacks.

  • Gamera977

    Oh that sounds hilarious!

I may have knocked ‘Battlefield Earth’ a little early…

A guy on YouTube was reviewing the new ‘Alien’ RPG. And I’ve never seen ‘Prometheus’ or ‘Covenant’. So I picked up all the ‘Alien’ movies on Blu-Ray. I figured what the hell- I’ve got the two good movies (1 & 2) on DVD, it won’t hurt to pick them all up on Blu-Ray. And so I’ve been going though all the movies. I’d forgotten just how good ‘Aliens’ was. And 3 was decent if not great. But I swear 4 aka ‘Resurrection’ gives ‘Battlefield’ a run for it’s money in sheer WTH were they thinking!?!

I liked Brad Dourif doing the twitchy goofball Brad Dourif schick. And Winona Ryder’s character had an interesting story. But everything else was horrible. I swear when the alien-human mutant pumpkin-head wanna-be baby thing shows up at the end I wonder how many people broke out into laughter?!? We have cells for ‘Aliens’ where acid can melt though the deck plates and allow Xenomorphs to escape!?! And it’s a medical ship with dangerous experiments- so it’s programmed to return to Earth if contact is lost!?! WTH was anyone thinking!?! Were they thinking at all!?! Was everyone involved on drugs!?!?!?!!

I amused myself thinking of some dialogue by Vincenzo as Kolchak covers Godzilla’s attack on Tokyo: “Kolchak! I’m paying you to report the news, not to commit suicide! Get out of there before you end up under a smashed pagoda! Carl? CARL!”

  • Eric Hinkle

This may matter to some of the folks here. I was stunned and dismayed to learn it.

Billie Hayes AKA Witchiepoo from HR Pufnstuf AKA Mammy Yokum from the Broadway version of ‘Lil’ Abner’ has died.

    Adios, Witchie.

Speaking of Japan, the next Laundry Series has Bob Howard battling Japanese yokai.

If you find it amusing when we pass dates in SciFi movies, note that May 9, 2021 is the date at the start of “Moon Zero Two”.

  • And now I have the Moon Zero Two theme song stuck in my head. Which is an observation, nothing more…

  • bgbear_rnh

Hee, hee. Happy Mothers Day on the Moon.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I remember reading that there was a scene in the script where the aliens chased people through a hydroponic garden…filled with marihuana. The film-makers probably thought “Why don’t we just smoke this instead of putting it in the movie?”

  • Gamera977

Somehow I think the drugs were a bit more hard core than simple ‘Mary Jane’…

  • Gamera977

And so I watched ‘Prometheus’ the other night. And I swear I liked the dang crazy thing. Despite the fact that the plot had holes big enough to fly a starship though, most of the characters- human, android, and engineer did things that made no friggin’ sense, and the story seemed like Scott had come up with a bunch of cool scenes and then just made up the most flimsy connective tissue to hold them all together.

But it was it’s own thing, in a world of boring cookie-cutter movies ‘Prometheus’ was it’s own kinda crazy and I have to respect that.

Or maybe after as bat-guano insane and just plain out awful ‘Resurrection’ was anything would look good.

‘Covenant’ was okay. Not good but I wouldn’t call it terrible. My main issue is again the characters were just out and out idiots…

  • Gamera977

I picked up all the ‘Road Warrior’ movies on Blu-Ray and a jar of Vegemite.

I’m hoping to spend next week going full Aussie…

  • Beckoning Chasm

Out there on the web is Jon Spaith’s original script for Prometheus, “Alien: Engineers.” It’s a much better read than what was ultimately made (in my opinion), and reinforces my decision to avoid anything with Damon Lindelof’s name.

  • Eric Hinkle

I like the first three of those films, even if I agree with Mr. Begg’s idea that the third one should have ended with Max returning to civilization along with the kids.

But if I had to make a choice, the chase scene from ‘Road Warrior’ proper is one of the best action sequences in all of cinema.
