Stuff (06/16/08)…

Sad news: special effects master Stan Winston has passed away at the much too young age of 62. RIP.

Keira Knightly as Eliza Doolittle in a new version of My Fair Lady? Uhm… For my part, My Fair Lady has always been my favorite musical, so obviously I look at this with a fair amount of trepidation. Meanwhile, you have to wonder if are they going to skip/alter some of Higgins’ (hilariously) sexist song lyrics, such as “A Hymn to Him”:

Why is thinking something women never do?
Why is logic never even tried?
Straightening up their hair is all they ever do.
Why don’t they, well, straighten up the mess that’s inside?

In any case, I’m sure the new version will make sure to point out much more strenuously than the Rex Harrison version Things that Are Wrong, just so that we rubes in the audience can be educated as well as entertained. Maybe Whoopi Goldberg could appear in a short before the film, warning, “Sexism was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.”
In similar news, Guy Ritchie is set to direct a big screen adventure for Sherlock Holmes….

With so much stuff out by now (still no Green Slime, though), they’re far fewer less awesome DVD releases these days. Still, having exhausted the store of Godzilla movies they had rights to, the fine folks at Classic Media, who have put out a simply fabulous series of Toho films up to now, are next to release a double bill of Rodan and (finally) War of the Gargantuas. The set will offer both the Japanese original cut and the “International” versions, aka in English (not the American dubs, though). Also included is an hour-plus documentary called Bringing Godzilla Down to Size. Damn, that’s awesome.

Also due out soon is the Jaws rip-off / political paranoia piece Barracuda, mated with something called Island Fury. That disc courtesy of Dark Skies, who generally give good product.

Keira Knightly really need to eat some hamburgers and fries (chips?) or she’ll whither away.

Sweet Boa of Western AND Eastern Samoa! War of the Gargantuas on DVD? My “Add to cart” finger is already twitching!

  • ERicb

The Japanese cut should be interesting what with all the “Frankenstein Conquers the World” references it should have. It’ll be interesting to see how the hell they connect the two films.

  • “Sweet Boa of Western AND Eastern Samoa! War of the Gargantuas on DVD?”

That reminds me, the second Futurama movie hits DVD in just two weeks.

  • Eric–

    That *will* be exciting.

Well, for like two dozen of us. But still.

Yeah The War of the Gargantuas, I had a crush on Akemi when I was a kid. KTLA in Los Angeles (owned by Gene Autry) did something unique. For their early evening movie, they would show the same film every night for a week. For film like Gargantuas, I would watch it every night.

Time for that Russ Tamblyn film festival, what an up and down career. I was thinking about this last night when I was watching Father of the Bride.

Old Gene must have been using that station as a tax write-off.

I believe KTLA made and makes a lot of money.

Stan Winston’s dead? Thats not good, not good at all. His creations we’re some of my favorite movie monsters from my childhood, the alien, terminator, predator, the Jurassic Park dinos. RIP Stan.

  • Actually, I think that idea originated with one of the New York stations (WOR?), where it was called The Million Dollar Movie. They would pick a film and run it once a day over the span of a week. WFLD in Chicago tried that back when I was a kid, but it didn’t stick. However, it was on that slot that I saw my first Godzilla movie, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster. I probably watched it three or four times that week, and have never looked back.

Yeah, I heard about Stan Winston. To quote ‘Enry ‘Iggins, “Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn, damn, damn…”

Ya know, I could forgive a lot of problems with the new My Fair Lady if they’d get rid of the bullshit “romantic” ending from the Hepburn/Harrison version.

In similar news, Guy Ritchie is set to direct a big screen adventure for Sherlock Holmes….

It took me longer to get that than it should have… And I’ve even seem Jeremy Brett recently, too. He was in one of the episodes of The Incredible Hulk SFC played this week. ^_^

  • No, seriously, Guy Ritchie is set to direct a new Sherlock Holmes movie.

Perhaps Madonna will play Irene Adler.

  • The Rev. D.D.

Man, one of my all-time favorite monster makers gone. That’s a heartbreaker.
Be at peace, Mr. Winston, and thank you for all those incredible critters.

On a happier note, Rodan is one of my favorite giant monster movies, and I’ll be glad to replace the cheap-o disk of it I have with ClassicMedia’s version. And tossing in War of the Gargantuas (paging Mr. Milroy) to boot? Yes please!!
I REEEEEALLY hope Toho gives them the rights to the rest of the ouevre. They’re doing an exemplary job with these things, and I would happily pick up every disk they put out in that series. Hell, I’ll get two of each for a spare if I need to…

Jaws rip-off / political paranoia piece Barracuda

“You say, ‘Barracude,’ people say, ‘Huh? Wha?’”

One of my favorite quotes ever, and believe me, it’s more than applicable regarding that movie.
