Imgur issues….

I’m not sure what’s up, but Imgur isn’t letting me upload pics, meaning I can’t put up a new one right now. I’ll try again later tonight. In the meantime, have a great day, everyone. Open thread if you saw anything over the weekend, or have a Christmas movie suggestion, or whatever.

Abominable Snowman vs polar bear with arctic fox watching.

I saw Ant-Man and the Wasp. It was okay, though the fact that everyone seemed pissed off at everyone else was a bit off-putting.

After the first Avengers film, everything since has seemed kind of “well-made but routine” (except for the Captain America films).

Nothing much on the movie front here. Finishing up the Phantasm series and it’s another that seems to ending with a whimper instead of a bang. The second was great, the third was pretty good, and the fourth was sorta a dud. Number five is up next, crossing my fingers. Thankfully it goes nowhere as low as the ‘Howling’ series though.

I have watched a bunch of Asian horror movies, all of them have been good but nothing that stands out as anything special. The last was ‘Fatal Beauty’, so-so story- the best part was the lead was played by a stunning Chinese actress who ran around in a skimpy sheer nightgown for about 90% of the movie.

I’ve seen a couple of Nativity movies advertised but I am wondering if any of them are good? What’s the best of them?

Speaking of Christmas movies, my review subject this year is MAGIC CHRISTMAS TREE. Never heard of it? Neither did I until it turned up as the main feature of a Rifftrax Christmas DVD. Honestly, after THE CHRISTMAS MARTIAN and SANTA AND THE ICE CREAM BUNNY I thought I’d be unable to dig up another wacko Christmas movie so bizarre, but my reflections will be posted later this month on Baker’s Log, God willing.

Speaking of which, Rifftrax also found some K. Gordon Murray featurettes spun off of the Mexican Santa Claus movie! They were shot at some kiddie parks and mixed with stock footage from SANTA CLAUS to show the goings on at a toy factory Santa operates. Santa and Merlin are involved, and so are the wolf and Stinky the skunk from the RED RIDING HOOD movies. If that weren’t enough, Puss N Boots is Santa’s security chief!

Big news on my front is that THE INVADER WITHIN is in pre-production! That was the movie that I was going to direct a while back, but I could never get the picture up and running. Canadian micro-budget director Seb Godin has picked up the project, however, and has begun casting for a shoot this Winter up in the great white north. I provided the screenplay and will be claiming a producer credit. Praise the Lord! It was a long time in coming from providing half the screenplay for VOYAGE TO THE PLANET OF TEENAGE CAVE-WOMEN, but I finally have another picture in the works!

If it matters to anyone, Haffner Press will be releasing the complete collected John the Balladeer stories by Manly Wade Wellman this coming Halloween for $90. Very, very pricy, but along with the short stories you get all the novels in one place. And they’ve been OOP for decades.

  • Eric Hinkle

Oh, did anyone see the new Wreck-It Ralph movie? Everyone I know has been telling me that it’s a must-see film.

  • Gamera977

Awesome to hear! I have collected all those one by one but I’ll have to give this a look. I still haven’t gotten around to buying the John Thunstone collection though…

  • Gamera977

Rock, I saw ‘The Invader Within’ on your blog. Best of luck with it!!!

And I’m going to have to look up some of those Christmas movies.

  • Gamera977

Also listened to a commentary on the ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’ that had me in laughing my tail off. Wish I could post a link but look in YouTube under ‘Star Wars Holiday Special Commentary The High Council’.

  • Ken_Begg

I remember that issue of Alpha Flight!

  • Ken_Begg

Also check out the animated 1991 feature The Christmas Tree. It’s nuts.

Haffner did a great hardcover collection of Wellman’s The Complete John Thunstone, which sold out almost immediately. This is a higher profile character, so they’ll probably print more, but it could easily sell out quickly too. So it’s a gamble whether to preorder it to be safe or maybe wait until it hits Amazon and perhaps get a bit of a discount. It’s a two-volume set, though.

  • Eric Hinkle

On the Out-of-Print and Low Stock page on the Haffner Press site, they list at least one ‘dinged’ copy of the John Thunstone collection s available for $90. So if you want it they’ve got it.

  • Ooh, ooh, ooh. I will totally cough up for those!

  • A bit late but yesterday I just found my new favorite stupid Christmas movie ever.

If you have Netflix, find The Christmas Chronicles. It’s your typical Kids-break-Santa’s-sleigh-and-have-to-help-Saint-Nick-save-Christmas schtick except Santa is a tempestuous red leather and fur clad Kurt Russell and he is EPIC!

The movie is pretty batshit insane too, with one point where we end up with three simultaneous plots (our characters get separated) that are each in a different genre. Don’t misunderstand, you can definitely doze through the non-Russell bits, but he totally makes the overall experience worth it. And genuinely laugh out loud funny in spots. 16 year old boychild even approved and he’s tough to please.

  • Gamera977

Thanks, I keep hearing good stuff about this. I’m going to give it a go sometime before Christmas.

  • Eric Hinkle

I would and will myself if I can somehow get the money together. I hope you get copies.

  • Gamera977

Just ordered a dinged copy of ‘The Complete John Thunstone’ and pre-ordered ‘The Complete John the Ballader!’ Thanks again!!!

  • Eric Hinkle

I hope you like them both.

  • It’s a complete blank for me.

  • Gamera977

Thanks! I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Wellman so far.
