A question about baseball rules…

Baseball has so many arcane rules.  Here’s my question:

Can the Cubs advance in the post-season in any way, based on further Brewers losses?

Because if they could, that would be very reassuring.

The Cubs magic number is two. So if the Brewers lose two their remaining three games, the Cubs win the division, even if the Cubs lose all three of their remaining games.

Yeah, the Cubs seem to be stumblng into a playoffs rather than charging into them, but that’s no sweat. Just get in the playoffs, and then we’ll see what the Cubs are made of.

  • Well, yeah, I know the Brewers losing can help get the Cubs *into* the playoffs? But is there anyway Brewers loses can help us *in* the playoffs. Because otherwise we’re solely relying, it seems to me, on the Cubs **winning** games themselves, and then…oh, boy.

Not to worry, Ken. The entire NL pennant race is made of teams that seem to reluctant to go ahead and win their divisions. Only the Rockies are charging full-steam towards the playoffs (assuming they make it), so I see the Cubs as no less likely to fold in the playoffs as any other team in the NL.

Buck up little camper. The Cubs were rolling until they hit this particular roadblock. Bear in mind from June 22 on, they are 51-39. Not the Yankees, but not terrible either. Even after the Miami Debacle, they are 10-5 in their last 15 games. Don’t let 3 bad games ruin it for you.

He’s right. The Cubs will have their division crown. They’ve got the irrelevant Reds to end the season, while the Brewers have to take on the Padres, who are fighting for their playoff lives, too.

It’ll be a beautiful weekend in Cub country. The sun will rise in October.

  • Thanks, guy! Full steam ahead!

Sadly, the Brewers have had every opportunity to be in first after this week, and have blown it. There’s still a chance if the Cubbies continue their freefall, but it’s looking very unlikely.

Still, when I go to the game on Sunday, if they’re still fighting for the playoffs, I’m gonna be as psyched as ever.

And…should the Cubs survive into the playoffs, I’ll put the rivalry aside for a month to see them become an NL Central team to win the World Series again.
