RIP James Garner

Mr. Garner served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was wounded twice, once in a friendly fired incident, and received two Purple Hearts. He was 86 at the time of his passing.

Sad day indeed. I remember watching reruns of the ‘Rockford Files’ when I was a kid but he was good in pretty much everything he played.
    RIP Mr. Garner.

    R.I.P indeed.
The man may have been mostly ‘playing himself’ to a certain extent, but when the himself is so easy to like…what the hey?

A bit of 80s arcana, Mr. Garner was considered the paragon of non-quiche eating men.

Just learned my mother, of all people, kinda-sorta had a crush on him, or rather the character he portrayed in ‘Maverick’. Still better than one aunt of mine who crushed on Liberace to the point that every time he have that wink to the audience at the end of a show, she KNEW it was meant for her.

Not a bid fan of Rockford Files but, when they re-ran Maverick in my area, it was a very welcome change of pace from the Gilligan Island etc re-runs.

Never will forget the two parody episodes “Maverick” did of other popular TV westerns. Don’t recall title but, one dealt with crooked Marshall Dodge in Dillon City, KS. The other the crooked Wheelwright family. Very unique at the time. It would be like “Lost in Space” doing an episode featuring Captain Church and the crew of the USS Surprise.

IIRC, in “Marlowe” he summarily defeated Bruce Lee.

  • Flangepart

And in a perfectly Maverick way…he let Lee defeat himself!

An interesting trivia note, Mr. Garner was the the actor upon which Troy Tempest was based. It’s very easy to picture him starring in a live-action version of Stingray.
