The Godzilla Trailer!!!!!!

I know you guys will roll your eyes in disdain at my fanboy enthusiasm, but I honestly believe this could be even a better Godzilla movie than the TriStar ’98 version. Yep, I said it.

Man, they’re really been sitting on this, haven’t they? So little stuff put out there before this. Can’t wait until May. This might be the first film I seen in 3-D Imax.

‘Anyway, director Gareth Edwards spoke to USA Today about Godzilla, which is releasing during the 60th anniversary of the titular monster. He said he wanted to treat the great beast like a force of nature and not humanize him. “To me, he’s like a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we’ve behaved,” he said. “I’ve just got a secret fantasy — well, it’s not very secret anymore — about living in a world where there’s fantastical things like giant creatures and what it would really be like and trying to take it seriously. And there’s no bigger or better icon than Godzilla.’

  • Gamera977

Frankly I have to be a little skeptical about any Godzilla movie made by an American studio.

  • Rock Baker

Um, why are ground troops, paratroops yet, being deployed against a giant dinosaur? Wouldn’t the logical tactic be to use heavy artillery and bombard the creature from a distance? If what we’re seeing is a rescue operation (given there might be people trapped in the rumble or some such), why dive in from the sky? And why have the flares active, given those would seem to be something that might attract the attention of the huge animal? I honestly expected Godzilla to turn and snap the one guy out of the air ala THE GIANT CLAW.

That said, I could certainly go for a good old fashioned army vs monster kinda movie! For the very first time since this project was announced, I’m quite anxious to see it (after it comes out on home video and my brother inevitably picks up a copy).

  • Eric Hinkle

I’d say that sounds like a great way to treat the Big G (unless you;’re going for comedy camp a la the 70’s Godzilla films). He is a force of nature, and he is NOT our big buddy.

  • Ken_Begg

I assume the flares are to keep the paratroopers from drifting into each other when they hit the dust cloud. Also, since they’ve been sitting so tight on this movie, I’m also assuming this extended preview is from an early scene in the movie, perhaps the one where Godzilla is first discovered.

But then, I wasn’t watching this with the sound on, so I don’t know if the dialog negates that premise.

  • Eric Hinkle

Dumb question time: why are the paratroops dropping with those red smoke bombs attached to their ankles? Doesn’t that just make it easier to see them coming?

  • Rock Baker

There’s a line to the effect that they’re going up against something previously unseen. Don’t get me wrong, while the paratroop thing struck me as odd, I’m certainly interested in seeing the film now!

  • Ken_Begg

It could be there is too much wreckage, combined with the dust field, to allow for ground reconnaissance to make it into the middle of the city in any sort of timely fashion. I’m sure it will be explained in the movie.

  • Ken_Begg

Again, my assumption is that it’s to help keep from from colliding when they hit the dust field.

  • Eric Hinkle

Thanks for explaining that. My sole experience with paratroop drops is watching WW2 movies, so this stuck me as odd.

  • bgbear_rnh

It looks like someone is getting a bad break

  • Ken_Begg

Or conversely, it could be to let the planes have an idea of where exactly they are hitting the cloud. Something like that.

  • Ken_Begg

I see what you did there!

  • Ken_Begg

I have to say, one thing I really like about the trailer (again, sans sound) is that it DOESN’T seem to go from scene to scene to scene laying out in detail what the entire movie is about. Show us big stuff from the beginning, to establish the film’s tone and esthetic, and then brief glimpses of what follows, and spare us the whole “Readers Digest Version of the movie” approach.

  • bgbear_rnh

I an waiting for Bryan Cranston to play Dr. Thadeus “Rusty” Venture.

  • Flangepart

And there be a Japanese guy HERE!
And one who speaks English, I hope.
Ground troops are only useful for crowd control or evacuation. Unless they have nukes strapped to their backs…

  • I’m just glad there is a new Godzilla movie coming. Right now I’d settle for a remake of vs. the Smog Monster. Or even Vs. Megalon It’s been too long.

  • Chad R.

I’m holding out for Jim Rash from Community as Rusty Venture.

  • Arthur Petersen

let me be clear about my thoughts:
There is no other movie I can think of that I have wanted to see in theaters as much as this movie since perhaps the Lord of the Rings.
    Period.
and now after reading what the director said (force of nature, etc.) my anticipation is doubled.
I secretly hate almost all of the Godzilla movies because I love the IDEA of Godzilla SO MUCH that nothing will ever be perfect about a Godzilla film for me. But since I know that about myself, I can end up enjoying all of them (except the ’98 ‘Merican one).

  • Flangepart

    Hummm….Modified roar…no neck…LOOKS to be standing upright…good CGI…yeah, might be better that 98…but what woulden’t?

  • The Rev.

If the cinematic gods got sick of my begging that Pacific Rim not suck (and thankfully granting my request), they’re probably going to smite me for all the prayers I’m going to be sending their way for this one. The two trailers I’ve seen have me nearly vibrating with anticipation because they look damn great. I am so excited about this. I know I should be leery, and after the glow of this new trailer wears off I am sure I will be (especially since the last time I was this anxious about a movie was 1998 and we all know how that turned out), but I want this to be good SO. FUCKING. BAD.

  • The Rev.

I’m curious, Arthur; which one(s) are the exception(s) for you? I would assume the original, at least?

  • bgbear_rnh

I like the look. Can he do the despair?

  • FEnM

Well, you know, life is unfair…

  • Ken_Begg

Finally watched the trailer with sound, it’s even better. I like this strategy a lot of giving you a taste of the film rather than a plot point by plot point exposition of 90% of the film’s action. The lack of sound and dialogue in the latter half of the trailer is great, it reminds me of the Alien trailer.

  • The Rev.

Yeah, I really appreciate not knowing the entire damn plot from the trailer. What a shock: not giving away the movie MAKES PEOPLE WANT TO SEE IT.

Granted, in this case I was going to see it no matter what, but my point stands.

  • Arthur Petersen

Well, maybe “secretly hate” isn’t the right phrase. I LOVE watching many of them – particularly a lot of the newer ones (90’s – 2000s), and vs Smog MOnster, Monster Zero, Destroy all Monsters, vs Gigan, vs King Kong are all great too. Plus, some of them have awesome jabootuoid dialogue and other entertaining things like that.

  • Food

What I noticed about the sound in the trailer was the use of Ligeti’s “Requiem.” This is the same soundtrack heard whenever the monolith was on the screen in 2001: A Space Odyssey. If it’s really going to be in the movie, and not just the trailer, that it’s a VERY VERY unusual choice; but if the idea is for Godzilla to be “something we’ve never encountered before,”….**shrug**….it may well wind up being a PERFECT choice!

  • David Lee Ingersoll

The leaked trailer (the one that played at SDCC) had a scene that’s not in this one, so it looks like there’s a lot more to this movie than we’re currently seeing. And that’s a good thing.
