Well, technically it's still Thursday here. Ken would approve of that, I think.

I ended up being a lot busier then I expected this week, with a bunch of hours opening up at my 2nd job that I wasn't about to turn down. I knew I shouldn't have agreed to this responsibility. Hell, I still haven't finished my Tween-Fest 2013 write-up...although I do aim to have it to Ken before T-Fest, as well as a T-Fest 2012 write-up with images he can actually see.

Wasn't I supposed to be talking about a monster here?

Sadly, these kind of faded images are probably the best look we'll ever get at this particular kaiju. I know that sometimes a lost movie will be found, like a few years ago with that great print of Metropolis. However, that was a recognized classic that had a fairly good chance of turning up. This one is barely known outside of hardcore kaiju eiga otaku. So, let's just say I'm not holding my breath for a Miracle in Seoul.

Cool monster! So this is a Korean film? I'd guess late '50s- early '60s since they were occupied by the Japanese Empire up to '45 and pretty much already a ruin after the Korean War without being hit by a kaiju.

BTW" I was wondering if you'd use your avatar as a MotD!

Yes, South Korean. It may have been made in the early '60s, but the release date was later '60s.

I thought about using She-Demon, but 1. That seemed too obvious, 2. I wasn't sure she hadn't been used already and didn't have time to check, and 3. An obscure kaiju was not only more me, but less likely to have been used by Ken already.

This sort of made me wish I'd hunted down pictures of King Kong Appears in Edo for my pic.

Currently trapped between this reality and the next battling rabid stuffed alligators in order to keep you all safe. Ingrates.

My understanding, and info on titles like these are so scant I can't say ANYTHING with certainty, is that the film was made in 1967, right around the time of YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP. Unfortunately, even as late as the 60's, film production and distribution was largely experimental in Korea (we can thank AIP-TV that the world at large has even heard of Yongary). Film prints were not protected or stored in a traditional sense. Also, very few prints were struck in the first place, so finding a Korean film from this period can be a bit of a lark. Hope springs eternal, though!

1967 was what my understanding was as well, but I can't claim to be certain of that. I've read it was the first Korean sci-fi film, which would indicate it came out before even Yongary. Considering it seems to have been in black and white while Yongary is color, this could very well be the case (not that lack of color indicates anything necessarily).

Interestingly, I stumbled on a claim today that this movie was actually screened in Korea earlier this year, which would indicate there are prints available in its home country. If true, that would be good news. Of course, its obscurity makes it unlikely that anyone would pay the money to restore and release it on DVD, so it may not make any difference re: our ability to see it.

You never know, though. There are guys like us quite devoted to getting these things into public view. I haven't completely given up on the hope that someone will release a pristine scope print of BIGFOOT or unearth a decent print of THE MUMMY AND THE CURSE OF THE JACKALS. If it's true a print of this particular film still exists, there's hope for a new release. (The only problem for someone like me is that it'll be subtitled instead of dubbed!)
