Yeah, I'd seen them some time ago where a commentator wondered the same thing. His idea was it must be the ultimate in political correctness. How can anyone be offended if no one can figure out what the hell they are!?!

I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry though at the woman from the PRC complaining about them resembling a security camera in the article though. If you're from Communist China I don't think you have much room to talk about the UK or anyone else being a police state....

I think Atlanta pioneered that with Izzy the "Whatzit" Though Izzy wasn't particularly weird or disurbing like the London duo. Really those two look like 1960s Dr. Who monsters.

Thanks Eric for the link, I'd forgotten about Izzy. Only thing I remember about the Atlanta Olympics was when my boss flew down to see them being very tempted to call the local radio station and asking them to play 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' in her honor.

Personally I'd have went with a comic British lion in tennis shoes and a track suit or some such but I'm not a big PR guy so what do I know?

But that would be glorifying imperialism.

I'm finding myself strangely jealous that Sydney never got anything like Wenlock and Mandeville or Izzy back in 2000.

Incidentally, I think Super Sentai/Power Rangers may be a better comparison than Doctor Who.

Considering that the promotional material from London says their eye is a camera to record everything, I don't think she's reaching too far here.

And when you consider the fact that London is possibly the most surveilled cities in the world, that's some great irony.

Ouch, I assumed it was just the detractors comparing them to cameras, didn't know they were supposed to be cameras, if it was in the article I must have had a brain fart and missed it.
And I'd heard about the traffic cameras in London but I didn't know they were that prevalent!

Thanks Petoht for correcting me, I had no idea!

Yeah, it was the sort of insane irony that can only happen with government bureaucrats.
