Bitter news today for movie and TV fans, and for myself in particular as I've always been a huge fan of Mr. Johnson, and in fact modelled myself after him in many ways (or, at least, his most famous character). Russell Johnson has died of kidney failure.
Mr. Johnson will forever be most fondly remembered as the beloved Professor Roy Hinkley in the timeless teleseries Gilligan's Island, and it's many follow-ups. Not only did Johnson play the Professor in the show's three seasons, but also in three made for TV features, two cartoon series, and a memorable episode of ALF.
Of course, genre fans had already been introduced to Mr. Johnson in science fiction films, including Jack Arnold's major classics IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (starring Richard Carlson, the actor Johnson most seemed to emulate as Professor Hinkley) and THIS ISLAND EARTH. Among others, he also played a nice meaty part in Roger Corman's most popular 50's B picture, ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS. Non-genre fans likely remember him best for a slew of western roles.
Mr. Johnson was a notable character actor with a distinctive voice, and I really can't say enough about how influential he has been. Perhaps the most glowing reflection of his performance as the most learned member of the castaways is that his character inspired several young viewers to go into science professionally.
