I thought the characters worked well, because they were intended to "just" be archetypes.
Also, that scene where Gypsy Danger is dragging the ship behind it to use as the world's most awesome club was a joy to behold.
When I saw that in the trailer, I broke into peals of wild giggles. That's how much it tickled me.

And I liked the last couple of Gojira/Godzilla movies: Giant Monsters All Out Attack, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, Tokyo: SOS better- not much better but better. And 'Gamera vs. Irys' is still my all time favorite Kaiju movie.
I liked GMK all right, but was not thrilled with either Mechagodzilla movie (although I liked the 2nd one better of the two). At some point when I have time I need to go back and give them a second go, see if I still feel the same way.
The Gamera trilogy was a thing of sheer beauty. Gojira is still my favorite giant monster movie and likely always will be, but Advent of Legion is in the 2nd place spot. Gamera vs. Queen Legion may be my favorite giant monster fight of all time.

Even Newt and Gottlieb who I found annoying comic relief the first time after viewing a few more times I love these guys! They added a bit of levity to the story and proved that you don't have to be square jawed hero to help out. In one of the extra clips the actor playing Newt joked that everyone has fantastic abs but him. And you have to love Perlman, he and 'Newt' really played well off each other.
I liked them the first time, honestly, which I didn't expect since I'd heard they were annoying. I thought they had good interplay together. Perlman I knew I'd enjoy; hell, I liked him in that ridiculous killer baboon movie he was in. As far as I'm concerned, he's in the "actors who can do no wrong" club, along with people like Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Bruce Campbell.
