People rarely mention my absolute favorite thing about this movie: the protagonist wasn't a total asshole. Holy seems to feel like jerks as heroes are mandatory, and to begin with I thought we were going to get that here. However, the hero (can't even remember his name, which is probably also an indication of something) sometimes bends his orders but he is never just rebellious. For example, saving the fishing trawler at the beginning. They told him not to do that, but he didn't let it keep him from still doing his job.

I had recently seen the latest Star Trek picture when I saw Pacific Rim, and the contrast between robo-pilot guy and the new interpretation of Captain Kirk was amazingly stark.

I think the poorly conceived add campaign did not help the box office for Pacific Rim in the US. "To fight monsters we made monsters." Wow, that is not even close to the situation. They should have gone with a "Snakes on a Plane" style campaign. "It's giant robots punching monsters in the head. What the hell more do you want?"

Del Torro is so detail oriented and so true to his individual vision that I was really surprised he seems to abandon the concept of "Kaiju Blue" after one mention. That was supposed to be the whole reason they punch the kaiju.

Oh, well. I loved Pacific Rim. Loved it!

Went back and watched it again this weekend, watched the commentary, the extra bits and then the 'fun' parts again. To me 'PR' has one of the marks of a great film- every time you watch it you notice some neat little detail you haven't noticed before.

Interesting in the original storyboard Gypsy Danger staggers ashore with the trawler in his right hand and Raleigh was just able to set her down before slamming the Jaeger face first into the beach. Not sure which version I like better.

If I may add I thought the acting a little stiff and wooden the first time though. On the second and third viewing I've changed my opinion- I think they nailed it, a little under-stated and just right. I think one thing here is that Stacker is such a great and bigger-than-life character that Raleigh and the others end up in his shadow. But going back I really think Raleigh was great, combat fatigue but still a generally nice guy with a bit of humor despite his problems.

I think it was one of our ministers that said one of the best ways to deal with your problems is to help someone else with their problems. By helping Mako deal with her demons he was able to rid himself of his own.

Even Newt and Gottlieb who I found annoying comic relief the first time after viewing a few more times I love these guys! They added a bit of levity to the story and proved that you don't have to be square jawed hero to help out. In one of the extra clips the actor playing Newt joked that everyone has fantastic abs but him. And you have to love Perlman, he and 'Newt' really played well off each other.

Sorry guess I'm gushing but this is the most sheer FUN movie I've seen in years.

Yeah the use of the freighter as a baseball bat was my favorite part of the movie, that and Stacker's speech about 'Today were canceling the Apocalypse.'

Both were about 50% cool and 50% goofy as hell which adds up to 100% awesome!!!
