It isn't bad but it's not great either. I thought Kitsch (John Carter) was pretty wooden. The effects were good but again there was too much jumping around to allow a coherent following of the action.

They did have a couple good jokes. Sadly they lost that at times and seemed to forget that this is really pulp sci-fi.

*** Spoilers ***

Collins (Deja Thoris) makes a comment about how her wedding dress being skimpy. It was a nice inside joke since in the book everyone runs around naked.

*** End Spoilers ***

I thought it was very enjoyable... sure it has its faults, it felt like they were leaving a huge chunk of the Martian mithology unexplained for pacing reasons, but it's the kind of movie I would have loved as a kid and would have been talking for ages during the breaks. That they had the budget to pull it off and that the leads are less wooden than usual also helped.

Now that I know for sure there won't be a sequel I feel a bit cheated, though.

Watched the DVD a couple of weeks ago, I found it a little weak at the beginning (up until Carter's first encounter with martians), I did end up thinking it was pretty entertaining.

I didn't think it was great, but I didn't think it was terrible either. It's rotten smell comes completely from the bizarre release of the film. It was an entertaining pulpy adventure romp, so it hit all the marks it needed to. The tattooed people didn't play to my personal tastes, and it could have used a Doug McClure, but for what was there it wasn't bad.
