Friday’s Discord Watch Party feature was Face of the Screaming Werewolf (1964). I’d never seen this before, and I don’t think anyone else had either. Which is weird because it’s the last time Lon Chaney Jr played a werewolf; let’s call his unnamed character Terry Lalbot. He also played, briefly (by which I mean like one shot) a mummy. The reason it’s so unseen, I’d wager, is that the movie only runs an hour, which means it wouldn’t have gotten much TV play when were were kids.
The best reason for it being unknown is that it’s a Jerry Warren joint. It’s funny, when I ran a Godfrey Ho movie recently I compared him to Al Adamson (not entirely without cause). However, Warren–at least in the period when we was buying the rights to foreign horror movies and cutting in cheaply shot English scenes to suggest they were American films. In other words, he’s the less talented (much less talented) K. Gordon Murray. This film cuts together (at least) two Mexican horror flicks, including, inevitably, an Aztec Mummy film. It’s pretty amazing how a *ahem* “movie” running only an hour and featuring a mummy and werewolf could be so boring.
Still, any notch in the belt for all us old horror completists.
Another Discord Watch Party this Friday.
