The second film was host Holly’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I’m not sure I’d seen that since it came out–I was kind of allergic of The Special Edition after they made that The Official Edition. We watched the Director’s Cut, because it skips the awful see-inside-the-alien-ship/shopping mall climax. Say what you will, it’s a great film, even if it’s nearly forgotten compared to Jaws, Raiders or ET.
Then I showed (who guessed?) the two part “Mission to Save the Earth” episode of Captain Planet, that introduced Captain Pollution, the (somehow) even more retarded evil version of Captain Planet. I hadn’t watched the show in years, but I still hate it, especially given that it was purposeful propaganda designed for small children. Screw you, Ted Turner (said by something for the tenth millionth time). The villains include a rat guy, a pig guy and a (I guess?) pineapple guy, so I guess they qualify as monsters. Although the REAL monster is Capitalism, or so billionaire Ted Turner assures us.
Villain names: Dr. Blight, Duke Nukem, Hoggish Greedly, Sly Sludge and Verminous Skumm. This story brings them all together. Because Captain Planet was so IMPORTANT tap talent played many of them (and remember, this was in the 80’s); Meg Ryan, Jeff Goldblum, James Coburn (oh, James), the inevitable Ed Asner…ugh. One villain, Zarm, was played variously by Sting (!), David Warner and Malcolm McDowell.
