We all have movies we think are weirdly overrated. What are some of your “favorites”?
I’m going to nominate 2016’s Colossal. It’s basically sort of an art house take on kaiju, but with a very bold, brave stance of being against the abuse of women. The recent Invisible Man remake got a lot of praise for the same thing. Since pretty much nobody is pro-abuse of women, I’m not sure what the big deal is. I mean, it’s not a bad hook to try something different, but the idea that this represents something amazing seems misguided. I think Colossal was also tongue-bathed by a lot of critics of the sort who usually think they’re above giant monster movies. I also thought the Walking Dead show was similarly advantaged, because it really didn’t do much that several really good zombie movies had already done. But if you never watched that sort of thing, you might have thought it was this groundbreaking stuff.
Colossal has inspired a lot of fawning over the years. Just yesterday it was included in an article I saw of “10 out of 10” giant monster movies. The author (or the AI acting as an author) also described it was “a masterpiece.” Look, I’m seen this and…it’s fine. 7 our of 10 maybe? I have no issue with others liking it more than I do, but really, a ‘masterpiece’? I don’t think so.
