Joan Fontaine is barely remembered except by old film buffs these days, but she was in her time a towering star. For one brief moment, she was perhaps the biggest star in Hollywood. Ms. Fontaine started her film career in the mid-1930s. She rose through the ranks quickly, and soon was costarring in classics…
Irish born actor Peter O'Toole gained immortality via one of the truly iconic film roles in cinema history, the titular Lawrence of Arabia in director David Lean's production. It was one of his earliest roles, and unsurprisingly he never really equaled its success again. He worked until the time of his death, though. He…
In the Hall of Jabootu Greats, no one, save perhaps Richard Burton, looms as large as writer / director / producer / actor Tom Laughlin. Indeed, Mr. Laughlin's small handful of films, especially his four Billy Jack pictures, were in a real sense the meat and potatoes of this site. Reviews of films like…
When I saw the title of this episode--"Monster Plant"--I was wondering if we'd get a taste of Biollante. More than a taste, as you can see from the still of people being attacked by whipping tentacles, and then particularly the image of a monstrous rose. More than that, the film also prefigures Legion from…
OK, now THIS is the stuff. That's a marvelous monster, and it looks fantastic on the show. I never liked monsters that were over-designed (one problem with a lot of CGI monsters), and this one is basic and just incredible. Top notch stuff. For a TV show, the effects are really top notch. Check…
Unsurprisingly for the first two episodes they didn't get too crazy (although it wouldn't take long). Here's a Kong-like chap, who is at least more sympathetic then Gomess. He ends the episode drugged and, we are told, to be taken to live in safety. Notice the tail in the last shot, because he's supposed…
I know you guys will roll your eyes in disdain at my fanboy enthusiasm, but I honestly believe this could be even a better Godzilla movie than the TriStar '98 version. Yep, I said it. Man, they're really been sitting on this, haven't they? So little stuff put out there before this. Can't wait…
I'm assuming this is a redressed version of the giant bird or condor or whatnot that rather quixotically attacks (for a very short period) Godzilla in Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster. The altered Godzilla suited used for Gomess, as seen in yesterday's MotD, is thus probably the suit that was used in that film.
In the 1950s, Eleanor Parker was a three time Oscar nominee for Best Actress (1950, 1951 & 1955) and a fairly major star. Her career never scaled the heights you'd assumed from those facts. She later was nominated, again for Best Actress, for an Emmy and a Golden Globe award, and didn't win either…
