And now the website is making me sleep on the couch…

Since for some reason we actually draw intelligent people to this site, one of our readers (note posted on the message board) noticed that we had started up in 1997.  Sadly, I completely forgot to remember this anniversary–hey, I’m a guy–but we hit the decade mark last month.  Our first post back on the Ken’s World of Awful Movies site, the initial version of Jabootu.com, was a review of The Giant Claw, posted on June 8th, 1997.  So it’s official, we’ll ten years old.

Far be it for me not to cravenly pimp this occasion.  If anyone would like to drop a ten spot into the tip jar, please feel free to do so.  I promise to buy bad movies with anything that comes in.  I realize a dollar is a year is probably more than my work’s been worth, but then, think of the wonderful articles we’ve posted from  Douglas, Jason, Jessica, Eva, Liz Kingsley and Lianna.  That stuff’s been pretty good, anyway.

In any case, I promise to try to remember what’s what in 2017 (wow, that sounds far away) when we’re twenty years old.  In the meantime,  I want to thank not just all our contributors, and Paul and Chris Maygar for doing the tech work that literally made the various versions of the site, but really, all of you guys.  The readers have really made the site what it is today, and I sincerely appreciate the fact that each and every one of you has stopped by and in many cases continued to visit us year after year.  God bless you.

Update:  Thanks to Alexander for the shiny new ten spot.  Looks like I might be buying that Women in Peril set from the Camp Classics releases after all.  Or maybe a copy of Reflections in a Golden Eye.  Valley of the Dolls?  So many choices.  Of maybe a DVD-R from Subterranean.  At Long Last Love?  Boom!? Butterfly?  Che!?  Heironimous Merkin? Lost Horizon? Mandingo? Dammit.  So many films.

  • Mr. Blue

Wow… 10 years already? Congrats and thank you for the great reviews.

  • Food

You rule, Ken! I hope the next 10 are even better!

Stop demeaning your work, Ken. I can’t stand political debates and I’ve read your Billy Jack reviews two or three times apieces.

  • Well, let’s admit it, Tom Laughlin is doing all the heavy lifting for those pieces. Thanks for the support, though.

  • GalaxyJane

Just wanted to say thanks for all the laughs over the last 10 years. I have followed this site faithfully since ’99 and it has been pure gold for a long-time bad movie buff. You have steered me towards some great (and, uh, not-so-great) stuff over the years. Thanks again.

  • Bill Leary

You guys think you get laughs from the stories as published. You should see some of the amusement I get to witness during proof reading. Some of those “turns of a phrase” become “twists of a phrase” and are even funier than what gets published.

Keep up the good fight, Ken. Protecting your fans from the worst of the worst is a nearly thankless job. But here’s a “thanks” from THIS member of your audience.

  • And thanks for helping to keep me honest over the years, Bill. Believe it or not, my writing has actually improved a bit since you and Carl took up that thankless task.

I’m just saying if any reviewer around here should be saying their stuff is lame it’s me. I can’t remember the last time I made a trenchant observation.

  • Hmm, that’s a pretty trenchant observation…THE DRY SPELL IS OVER!!

    (Just kidding, of course.)

  • El Santo

Hot dang. 10 years is mighty impressive. I remember trying to start up a review site with some online friends around that same time, and around the two year mark we ran out of gas.

Of course, we were not powered by the blessings of Jabootu.

    Here’s to another 10!

  • Dan Coyle

Well, as a flaming liberal, I have to say the Superman IV: The Quest For Peace review is one of the most well-argued pieces for conservative thought I’ve seen. I love the Billy Jack reviews too.

  • The Rev. D.D.

10 years…that’s fantabulous, that is. Keep up the exemplary work, Mr. Begg. Here’s to another 10, at least.
