Monster of the Day #574

Getting a head was on her bucket list.

  • The Rev.

This might be one of the craziest movies I’ve seen, and that’s saying a lot. Lots of fun, though.

  • kgb_san_diego

This was one of my favorites from T-Fest a few years ago. Bananas!

  • Flangepart

Hey, look it up in the dictionary.
    Insanity=Japanese cinema. It’s a widely believed fact.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, it was one for the books. And then the Criterion DVD was released, allowing me to add it to my collection.

I showed it at a Halloween party a year or two ago, and broke the mind of one of my friends. He was practically drooling by the time it was over.

  • Gamera977

When the floating head bites the poor gal on the tush I almost choked I was laughing so hard. I mean to find your friend’s decapitated head wasn’t bad enough but then it animated and bites you on the butt?

Yeah, absolute bat-guano insane movie- can’t help but love it!

  • SteveWD

Finally caught this on TCM not too long ago. Every bit as insane as I had heard – and then some. Love the guy turning to a pile of bananas toward the end.

  • Ken_Begg

I almost used the tush-biting shot, but it looked a bit weird out of context.

  • bgbear_rogerh

    Kitty!

  • As wacky as the Japs can get -and that’s pretty wacky- I think they still fall short of the absolute berserk insanity of the other Asians. The Koreans, the Chinese, in particular the Thai…. Although Mexico comes close sometimes with their children’s films.

  • What ever this is, it has gorgeous color!

  • kgb_san_diego

House, or Housu. Fun, fun stuff.

  • Is there a dub track for this flick? Or is it one of those reserved for “egg-heads”?

  • GalaxyJane

Because it was totally not weird *in* context. Not. at. all.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, it fits the tone of the movie. If you haven’t seen it, it looks like a fetish shot.

  • Ken_Begg

Nope. If you want to watch it, it has to be as God, and Nobuhiko Obayashi, intended.

  • Flangepart

Hummm. Well, that could be, as I’m only familure with Nippon. Just reading some review makes me think sanity is a lot more dubious than I realized.

  • Gamera977

Scary thing is I’m sure there’s an anime/manga somewhere about a disembodied head biting Japanese schoolgirls on their hinders…

  • Ken_Begg

We still top ’em with Re-Animator, though.

  • The Rev.

Not familiar enough with Chinese films outside of kung fu ones, but Thailand and Korea do indeed come up with some quite berzerk stuff. Hong Kong should also be on that list, I suppose.
Mexican kiddie movies and some of their lucha libre stuff, yeah, pretty nuts. I LOVE the kiddie movies I’ve seen. That Red Riding Hood/Tom Thumb team-up one we watched a couple of years ago filled me with sheer delight.

  • The Rev.

Don’t let a lack of dubbing stop you, though. It has to be seen to be disbelieved.

  • Gamera977

Hell yeah! I need to drag my copy of Re-Animator out and watch it again in time for Halloween.

  • MrTongoRad

Holy Cow! Thanks for that tip about the Criterion DVD, Ken. I was able to search the County Library’s database for it- and it’s available! I know where I’m stopping on my way home. I think I searched a couple of years ago to no avail; I’m very happy I gave it another shot.
