Happy Birthday Akira Kurosawa

Here’s to the world’s greatest film director, gone but never to be forgotten. Anyone who hasn’t seen his work, start with the Seven Samurai and then work through every film of his (quite a few) available on DVD.

For those who have seen his work…start with the Seven Samurai and then work through every film of his (quite a few) available on DVD.

  • I didn’t know it was Kurosawa’s birthday.

I’m currently waiting for my Amazon order of Kagemusha (to be released March 25) and Drunken Angel (sadly only available on VHS).

  • Whoops. Kagemusha is coming out the 29th, not the 25th.

  • Good man. I ordered my Kagamusha DVD months ago, and am eagerly awaiting it.

I’m sure you have all the various Criterion discs, bless ’em. (Actually, I haven’t bought Redbeard yet, although I’ve rented it.) They’ve done well by him.

  • I do have all the Criterion DVDs (which I actually didn’t realize until I checked), plus the Masterworks Edition of Ran.

And my cats are named Kambei and Kikuchiyo.

  • Mr. Blue

I need to get cracking on my Kurosawa collection- I only have Throne of Blood and Yojimbo at the moment.

  • God, I loved Yojimbo. What a fun movie that was. So much better than Fist Full of Dollars. And I like Fist quite a deal.

  • John Nowak

I liked Sanjuro a lot. Not a patch of Yojimbo, of course, but there’s some wonderful subtle stuff with Mifune’s body language around the old woman.

  • I’ve got the Criterion Seven Samurai DVD, and The Hidden Fortress laserdisk.

He was a master. Saying more is irrelevant.
