Monster of the Day #337

Among the many words of wisdom Sandy Petersen has spoke until me over the years, there is this: “The thing about Japanese ghosts is that they are always malevolent.”

“The thing about Japanese ghosts is that they are always malevolent.”

With the exception of Sayo Aisaka from Mahou Sensei Negima (unless you count the time she got her hands on a gatling gun, and even then she was still one of the good guys), Yuichi Shibata from Bleach (plus most of the other Wholes and Soul Reapers), and probably a lot of other characters I can’t name off the top of my head.

Well, there was that “100 monsters” trilogy, if that counts.

Nipponese ghost stories must be pretty linked to the culture, since so few ever reached American screens (in fact, I’m not sure I can think of any Japanese ghost movies dubbed for mass market, although I know a handful were subtitled and released in coastal theaters for the long hair crowd). I couldn’t begin to guess which film this still is from.
