Monster of the Day #293

The special season ender of “Man vs. Food” might have finally taken things a bit too far.

Why am I thinkin’ ‘Attack of the crabs’, the british giant crab novels?
I mean, that looks waaaay too big for a Corman budget…

  • The Rev.

Oh, is this that Island Claws movie I’ve heard about?

Also, how are those two seemingly unaware of the big-ass crab that’s practically upon them?

oops, the director got the ” and ‘ symbols wrong again in that note to the prop department. We’ll need a 10 inch crab for the food fight scene.

Rev, this is the final shot, after the beast has already been killed. Those guys are looking over the body. (The reveal of the monster is a great moment, however!)

This was such a nifty (if largely static) prop, it made the movie a minor gem. You could almost think of it as a slicker, tropical version of Giant Spider Invasion, as most of the film details attacks by groups of normal sized crabs with this thing held in reserve for a big finish.

Not great or anything, but Island Claws is a fun throwback to the 50s giant monster movies. I REALLY need to get my hands on the tape. Anyone know if there are plans for a DVD release to rescue this thing from obscurity?

Ah…so the 'Man Vs. Food' reference gets interesting…somehow…
Ooh, ooh, 'Deadliest catch'!..Uh, 'Good eats?' No, wait. Alton's done the 'Jaws' parody in the squid show…
I'm sorry, but unless the lil skuttlers have lasers, I'm having a hard time with the 'ol suspension of disblief thingy.
