TCM in October Part 1

Lots and lots of stuff, because of Halloween this month. Here’s what caught my eye, but the full schedules can be found at TCM.com.

All times Central Standard Time

October 1st Friday
7:00 PM Horror of Dracula
8:30 Brides of Dracula
10:00 Dracula Prince of Darkness
11:45 Dracula Has Risen from the Grave
1:30 AM Psychomania
3:00 Daughters of Satan

Oct 2nd Saturday
5:15 PM The Land that Time Forgot

Oct 3rd Sunday
11:00 AM Wait Until Dark
11:30 Phantom Interesting-sounding silent film directed by Nosferatu helmer F.W. Murnau
Oct 5th Tuesday
Fredric March is the star of the month, and his first featured night features titles of interest, including
7:00 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
11:45 I Married a Witch A charming comedy with Veronica Lake that certainly inspired the sitcom Bewitched.
1:15 Tick…Tick…Tick… A racial drama about a new black sheriff in a Southern town (shades of Blazing Saddles), starring March, Jim Brown and the inevitable George Kennedy. What, no Strother Martin?

Oct 6th Wednesday
I assume everyone has seen these, but starting at 7:00 PM TCM runs in a row Citizen Kane, The Seventh Seal (the movie where Max von Sydow plays chess with Death) and The Third Man. ‘Nuff said.

October 7th Thursday
Adventure in Space Night
7:00 PM Forbidden Planet
9:00 Alien
11:15 Countdown
1:00 AM Marooned
3:15 From the Earth to the Moon

  • BeckoningChasm

I love Alien. So much so, that I think I own it in every available format.

  • The Rev.

Don’t assume…I’ve only seen part of Citizen Kane, and I still need to get to my DVR’d The Seventh Seal from the last time TCM played it. I was going to mention The Third Man to you, even though you probably own it and have seen it dozens of times, but you were already aware. I haven’t seen that either, so I plan to record that.

I’ve also not seen any of those six movies on Friday. Or Wait Until Dark. Or the entirety of Forbidden Planet. And I want to see Phantom.

Man, TCM did this to me last year, playing so much stuff I couldn’t see or record it all!

  • I’ve probably seen The Third Man more than nearly any other film; certainly it’s in the top ten. I’m sure I’ve seen it half a dozen times just in theaters. It’s a GREAT movie and is endlessly rewatchable.

Wait…Good grief, man, you have never seen HORROR OF DRACULA?! How is that possible? Clearly some of you Texas people should be getting together on a weekly basis and catching up on your cinema.

  • On Halloween my wife will be out of town. I will be sitting alone doing whatever it is morose Mormon men do instead of drinking heavily.

Any Texans who want to be come to my place to watch an umpteen-hour horror marathon are hereby officially welcomed. Kirk? Rev? Chad? Any takers?

I guess I can take people from Oklahoma too if they don’t get all vocal and obnoxious.

  • John Campbell

    Is TCM a subscribed channel?

I think I’m mixing it up with AMC in me head.

    I blame work.

  • Rock Baker

Not that I’ll be able to watch, but which version of Psychomania?

I would love, just absolutely love, The Third Man, except I can’t stand that zither score! It cries out for a Miklos Rosa/Max Steiner-type full orchestral soundtrack! It’s like watching Casablanca with the soundtrack composed with a single banjo. That aside, it’s an excellent movie.

I finally got to see Alien again recently. Once again I felt it was over-rated. Right after that I got to see Aliens all the way through for the first time. That one lived up to its reputation.

Off topic, I also saw Pumkinhead the other night. It was an extremely well-made horror film, thanks, Ken, for suggesting it!

  • It’s part of the super-basic cable where I am. I basically just get that, Food Network and Discovery now. Which is about 95% of what I was watching anyway.

AMC used to be like TCM, but then they started editing their movies, showing their in zoombox (shiver) and having commercials. TCM is still the real deal.

  • It’s the undead biker gang Psychomania.

Glad you like Pumpkinhead. It’s pretty slick.

I’ve have to disagree with you on the zither. It’s a classic score.

  • Man, I wish I could join you, Sandy.

  • zombiewhacker

The Third Man is one of the few classic movies I’ve seen that deserves to be called a classic.

You guys who get TCM are so lucky. It’s not availablew where I live in eastern Canada. I check their website sometimes just to see the kind of programming they have. Seems like such a cool channel.

  • The Rev.

Ken: Yeah, I know. I’ve not seen any of Hammer’s Frankenstein films (although that changes next month, thanks to TCM), and the only Dracula one I’ve seen was Dracula AD 1972 when TNT ran it one night yeeeeears ago. Those films seem to get almost no airplay, at least that I’ve seen. I haven’t gotten them on DVD because…well, I have a lot of stuff I want on DVD that I haven’t gotten yet.

For further shame, I have never seen the Lugosi Dracula either, although I’ve seen all the other classic Universals and Nosferatu, and am currently reading the novel.

Sandy: Hallowe’en is on a Sunday, right? So, no work or anything…I might be able to do that. I’d certainly love to do so.
