Hah, I was blanking on the “walnut alien” and had to back track to remember what it was. Accurate description.

  • I have a feeling monsters 101-200 are going to grow more and more obscure.

  • KeithB

Well, he hasn’t tapped “Lost in Space,” yet.

  • KeithB

Well except for Carrot man in #16. [face-palm]

  • John Campbell

Lost in space would make great fodder for MoTD.

Harking back to discussions on validity of certain humans being considered monsters in movies like Jason and freddie.

Would it be better to say they are just monstrous as versus an actual monster?

    Talk amongst yourselves!

    =D

I just saw a great monster on Thriller episode. It has a head that looked like it was made up soley of lips (and it had the hands from The Creature Walks Among Us). Very weird.

  • The question of whether a human is a monster is reasonable. Freddy Krueger would probably qualify for most people. What about Jason or Michael Myers? They are human, but with mild supernatural powers. Working our way down, what about Norman Bates? Is HE a monster? Most folks would probably say no.

I just saw a recent Japanese horror flick which I would classify as a good old-fashioned monster movie. But, technically, the monster is “just” a deformed child. But she behaves monstrously and is strong and fast. I’d say she was a monster.

What about Charlie Tibbs? Arch Hall Jr’s psycho from The Sadist was every inch a monster, as had been Max Cady. I’d say humans should largely be excluded from Monster of the Day, since MOTD celebrates fictional terrors. There are many a very real monster in our own society, and characters like Tibbs and Cady reflect that, and somehow I think allowing them to join in would suck some of the fun out of this. The exception might be Hitler, in his head-in-a-pickle-jar days.

I see Mull hasn’t been honored yet, so I can take back my retraction concerning my request that he be so honored.

Ah, lot’s a happy times in that list!

  • Ericb

    Is Torgo a monster?

  • Rock Baker

Torgo has two sets of eyebrows. Whatever he is, it ain’t human. (I know the knees are more obvious, but no one ever seems to notice the extra eyebrows!)

  • BeckoningChasm

The Outer Limits has barely been tapped as well.

  • KeithB

Or Jonny Quest, since these seem to be monsters from Ken’s past.

(Heck, the whole cast of the Herculoids)

    Or are animated monsters out?

  • TongoRad

Now I can make my own list- as MoD was progressing I have been prompted to watch or rewatch many of these subjects. It has been very enjoyable to say the least (I have to admit not having seen Frankenstein since probably the 1970’s, and quite frankly, was totally blown away by it, and may have even gotten all weepy at the end- but that part I won’t admit). Now to tally how many I’ve done in that time…

  • zombiewhacker

Since we’ve discovered Ken is a big fan of giant octopi, we can likely expect The Monster From The Ocean Floor and Space Amoeba in the near future.

(‘Course, my preference would be Ursula from Little Mermaid, but toons don’t count!)

  • Actually, I never meant to excludes cartoons or any other source. A monster is a monster.

  • The big problem is that “monster” is kind of like “pornography”. It’s hard to define, but we know it when we see it. But then we can’t convince anyone else that our personal opinion is correct.

Are Fuad Ramses or Montag monsters?

  • Calypso

There’s something wonderfully rhythmic about that list if you read the names one after the other….there’s a “12 Day of Christmas” kinda vibe going there. Hmmmm.

  • Rock Baker

You could spend a month on the monsters of Scooby Doo. Or do they not count since they’re always unmasked to be some troubled authority figure?

  • fish eye no miko

Rock Baker said “You could spend a month on the monsters of Scooby Doo. Or do they not count since they’re always unmasked to be some troubled authority figure?”

Actually, there have been a few made for TV (or video?) movies in which the gang encountered actual monsters. SD on Zombie Island and SD and the Witch’s Ghost are a few examples.

I was thinking of the first series from 69-70. The best series the fanchise had to offer, although the second or third show had its moments. It was okay up until they introduced Scrappy Doo.

Didn’t the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo have real demons or something? All I really remember is that it had Vincent Price.

I’ve always been intigued by the various re-treads of the formula in the wake of Scooby Doo. Some I liked for various reasons (Josie and the Pussycats, The Funky Phantom), some I didn’t really like (Speed Buggy, Jabberjaw), but each had its own spin on the same themes and observing the genre as a whole is fairly interesting (and the knock-off cartoons can even include the Scooby Doo sequels, starting with The New Scooby Doo Movies, once they felt they needed an extra hook).

  • The Rev.

Rock–yes, “13 Ghosts” had actual ghosts in it. Possibly demonic-type critters too; it’s been forever since I saw it. Once in a while I notice it on Boomerang but then I forget and miss it.

I finally got to see Five Million Years to Earth again. And at the risk of being kicked out of here, I found it rather over-rated. Oh, it was a good movie, but hardly the essential classic I’d been told about.

Might’ve helped (for me) if they’d brought Brian Donlevy back for a third go.

I’m sorry about that multiple post. I’m not sure how that happened.
