Chicago stuff…

First, just a reminder that this Saturday at the Portage my pals will be running their monthly show, featuring this time around Small Soldiers, Incredible Shrinking Man, Son of Frankenstein and Frankenstein’s Daughter.  All for ten smackers.

Meanwhile, when I recently lobbied John, the guy from Time Tunnel Toyz who runs the shows, to show The Car during this year’s multi-day Halloween week show, he confided that a Car / Duel double bill might be in the works!  Hazzah!

Meanwhile (and dammit, I already missed 7th Voyage of Sinbad because I forgot to look for the new schedule) the Music Box has their summer schedule up, and on matinees on the weekend for the next month or so are featuring Harryhausen films.  This next weekend sees Jason and the Argonauts (that will be a busy Saturday!), followed by Mysterious Island (YAY!), First Men in the Moon, One Million Years BC and Clash of the Titans.  Personally I’d MUCH rather see Beast from 20,000 Fathoms than First Men in the Moon, my least favorite Harryhausen, but there you go.

Other Music Box features include Romero’s latest zombie epic (yawn) Survival of the Dead starting this Friday, the restored Metropolis starting June 4th, The Best Worst Movie, the documentary about Troll 2, starting on July 30.

Midnight movies include The Room (June 12th, July 16th, Aug 7th), the premiere of Birdemic (I’ll be there!) on June 18-19th), Breakin’ on July 9-10th, and Troll 2 July 30-31st.

And don’t forget that G-Fest is in town the weekend of July 10th, and showing Godzilla movies in the gorgeous old movie palace the Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge.  Thursday sees FOUR G-movies, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Mothra (’90s), Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs Megaguirus. Friday late night sees Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, and Saturday late night sees the original, Japanese Gojira.

Someone actually made a documentary about Troll 2? The mind boggles.

  • Yes, and it’s supposed to be pretty good. Sadly, The Room has been grabbing all the ‘worst movie’ mojo lately (with Birdemic an up and comer), so the film will have a shorter shelf-life than they may have hoped.

  • I really liked “The First Men in the Moon”, although more as a sci-fi movie than a Harryhausen film. The book is pretty cool, too.

All I can say is count your blessings. Just the thought of seeing Frankenstein’s Daughter or Incredible Shrinking Man on a big screen is enough to drive me nuts, knowing that noting like that will ever be shown locally out here.

  • Rock, that’s what I thought for decades here in Chicago (and of course it could easily go away again), but now there’s a lot of this stuff happening here. So maybe it will happen around where you live, too.

It’d be nice, since one of the last drive-ins is fairly close to where I live!

Good luck with Birdemic, Ken. It really is a hell of a thing.
