Amazon is selling some nice sets for heavy discounts right now.
The eight film William Castle Collection, which features some of his more obscure movies that hadn’t been out on DVD before (Zotz, Thirteen Frightened Girls, The Old Dark House). Extras sound bountiful; there’s a in-depth review of the set here. The collection has a MSRP of $81; Amazon is currently selling it for $36.
Also out this years was the four Icons of Horror Hammer Films, featuring The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb, Scream of Fear, The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll and (yay!) The Gorgon. Review of the set here. Retailing for $25, Amazon is now selling it for only $10.50. Hell, The Gorgon alone is worth that.
As previously noted, the Icons of Sci-Fi Toho Collection is also on sale, featuring Battle in Space, the very cool monster noir The H-Man, and (yay!) Mothra. Review of set here. MRSP of $25, Amazon is selling it for $13.50.
Meanwhile, for something a little different, I can highly recommend the Warner’s Gangster Collection Vol 1, which offers such classics as The Public Enemy, White Heat, Angels with Dirty Faces, Little Caesar, The Petrified Forest and The Roaring Twenties. Seriously, if you don’t buy the set, at least check out some of the films. Start with White Heat. Great stuff. Amazon is selling the $70 set for $26. All the discs are loaded with extras. The further volumes of the collection, feature more terrific movies, are similarly discounted.
