Harper’s Island starts tonight…

CBS’ slasher-infected 13 part serial starts tonight (we’ll see if it doesn’t get cancelled before the story reaches it’s end).  I’m not sure I’ll get a chance to see it, but if anyone does and wants to comment on it, here’s the spot.

  • The Rev. D.D.

I hope that this first episode will not be indicative of its quality, and that it will pick up after having to introduce everyone and their various foibles, along with a few red herrings. I wouldn’t say it was bad, but it needs to pick things up to keep my interest. (I felt the same way about the 1st season of “Heroes” too, although I don’t expect it to be that good.)

I will say the kills were pretty nasty, especially the first one. i was also caught a bit off-guard by the identity of the second victim. Plus, I think it might be fun matching my extensive slasher knowledge against the makers, and see how much they stray from the cliches. (Although I have to say, so far they’re not straying much at all.)

I’ll definitely give it a chance.

Yeah, there was no way I could have guessed that that person was gonna die so soon… s/he seemed like s/he was going to be a major character. And the death itself… Dear, God… O_O

I agree that it was slow; it also seemed really… soap opera-y. And the whole “rich guy trying to stop his daughter from marrying a poor guy”… Cliche, lame, and annoying. Argh. Also, the British guy’s failed attempts to give his girlfriend the (engagement?) ring? Just stop. Hey, when she screamed after going into the water, did you think maybe she had found one of the body parts from the first victim?

Anyway, it didn’t exactly thrill the crap out of me, but I liked it enough to come back next week. Knowing it’s limited run series helps, too… they can only keep up certain plot lines for so long before they have to get to the murder mystery part, so I hope if I sit through the annoying melodrama crap, I’ll be rewarded with an interesting mystery (and maybe some of the character that are bugging me will die). We shall see. ^_^

  • Blackadder

My wife watched it. It didn’t really interest me, from what I saw. I thought the method of the first murder was pretty ludicrous.

    Blackadder–
I might agree with “ludicrous,” but all the same I’d REALLY rather not end up in a situation like that.

    Fish eye no miko–
I knew she was screaming just to mess with her boyfriend; partly because it happens all the time in slashers, and partly because it’s WAY too early for people to start finding bodies. Gotta wait a bit for that.

And I’m totally with ya on the “giving her the ring” hijinx. Once was too much.

  • Wouldn’t want to go that way? Agreed. But yeah… more than a little ludicrous. I just remember cocking my head and thinking ‘how the heck is *that* supposed to work?’

Overall analysis, however? I expected it to be a lot, lot worse, but I’m glad it’s only 13 ep’s long. I just hope that it really is 13 ep’s long, and not something they’re using to set up a continuing, recurring series. At this point, it’s hard to have any real idea of the feel of it, but I’m chalking that up to the fact that (compared to a 90 minute slasher flick) we’re only about 5 minutes into the “film,” so I shouldn’t really *be* getting a firm feel for it yet.

So for now… I continue my iTunes subscription to the free ep’s (of all the programs to put on *after* I have to crash for the night, dangit… I hate getting up at 5 in the morning to go to work.)

According to the article I read in Fangoria, each season one be a different themed slasher premise. For instance one season would be like Saw, another like Scream, another like Friday the 13th, etc. I assume each season would have (I would hope) a completely different cast of characters, with no connection at all from one season to the next. I for one think it’s a great idea.
