Monster of the Day #3449

Back to pulp covers tomorrow. When I returned to work yesterday, I had forgotten that I had bought a ticket for last night to finally see Princess Mononoke. I had seen Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind a few months ago (allowing me to finally get a hilarious joke sequence in Bocchi the Rock! when I rewatched it this weekend). Mononoke is basically an even more assured reworking of many themes from Nausicaa. There’s not many directors who have made a film even as good as the latter; it’s a sign of what a staggering artistic figure Miyazaki is that it represented him on the ascendant rather than being one of the true highlights of his career.

I’m still working it over in my head, but certainly the hand drawn animation for Mononoke is as good as anything Ghibli has ever done. Just a gorgeous film to get to experience on the big screen.

If nothing else, I exhort people to go see Spirited Away in October. (The Birds will also be playing.) You won’t regret it.

Did anyone see Meg II? I considered it, but the reviews aren’t great.

I think Spirited Away is one of the greatest films ever made, and I really love My Neighbor Totoro. But I have never “gotten” Princess Mononoke. When I watched it, I felt as if I was reading a fantasy book where someone had ripped out the first five chapters.

  • I think Mr. GJ and the boys are going to see Meg 2 tomorrow night. Fortunately I’m working out of town this week.

The Meg 1 was good dumb fun, but a BIT too strong on the dumb for my taste. And like most sequels, it looks like this one doubles down on the dumb. I’ll pass for now.

And yeah, Spirited Away is a stone cold masterpiece.

Fair enough. I kind of like that approach though; certainly more than today’s decompressed storytelling. I think the worldbuilding itself carries this aspect. Even when we don’t really understand something’s role–like those little white dudes with the rotating heads–they somehow feel organic, as if they occupy an environmental niche that we’re not yet privy to.

Mononoke is one of my top five movies ever made. Spirited Away, probably top 20.

  • The Rev.

I think this is due for a rewatch, as I haven’t seen it since its original American theatrical run…which I just looked up and was apparently in 1999 so yeah definitely need to rewatch it. I do remember enjoying it a lot. I had gotten into anime before then but hadn’t seen any of Miyazaki’s stuff prior. (In hindsight I wish I’d rented Totoro and Kiki as a kid when I saw them in video stores, but obviously I was clueless about them.)

I’m no sophisticate. I like wolves, so I like Princess Mononoke for San and her pups.
