We Are What We Buy: October 2008 edition

(When you see this list I had to type out, you’ll know why I’ve avoided this.)

October proved a perfect storm. Amazon was selling a large batch of cool horror flicks on DVD for five bucks or less, so we sold a lot of items.  That, in turn, raised my residual percentage for the month, even though the items were low-priced ones.  Then an old associate of mine and this site bought a VERY large ticket item for his Mrs., which in conjuction with my once-in-a-lifetime residual percentage netted me about $50 on that item alone.

What did I do with that exact half c-note bonanza?  Well, a third party Amazon seller was hawking this for only about $50, so…

A fabulous item, I must say, and one that sits proudly next to my similar 20 pound editions of The Compete Far Side and The Complete Calvin and Hobbes.

Let’s start with books.  There were no multiple copies of any one item sold, so…

A Bone to Pick (Aurora Teagarden Mysteries); Ask a Ninja Presents the Ninja Handbook; Bone by Bone, Confessions of a Werewolf Supermodel; Dead Girls are Easy; Fable II Signature Series Guide; Fallout 3 Collector’s Edition; Mad’s Greatest Artists: The Complete Don Martin; Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere; On the Side of the Angels: An Appreciation of Parties and Partisanship; Our Dumb Century (The Onion); Permanent Address; Plainsong; Real Murders (Aurora Teagarden);  Thanksgiving 101; The Complete Peanuts 1969-1970; The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard; The Weaver and the Factory Maid; The Process of Government; Three Bedrooms One Corpse (Aurora Teagarden): Witch in the House.

Sundry items included a Swiss Army Knife, an Xbox 360 controller, a storage chest for watches (ca-ching!  Thanks!), and a Hannah Montana Tote Bag with Wig and Assorted Accessories, Turquoise. (Just one?!)

Music CDs included Steve Winwood, a John Waters Christmas (!),Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock (Joe Satriani) and Show of Hands, this month’s obligatory Rush album.

As I noted, Amazon was selling skads of cool horror DVDs for like five bucks, including a batch of nifty Something Weird double bills.  Multiple sales were few (the winner was five copies of Doctor of Doom / Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Mummy, I’m happy to say), including three copies of Sting of Death / Death Curse of Tartu, and 2 copies of Basket Case, as well as Monsters Crash the Pajama Party, Shaun of the Dead, Terror in the Midnight Sun / Attack of the Animal People, The Ghastly Ones / Seeds of Sin, and the Paul Lynde Halloween Special.  I can honestly say I think all of those buyers must have been pretty happy with their purchases.

Single DVD sales…whew:  A Scream in the Streets; Alone in the Dark; Attack of the 50 Ft. Monster Mania; Attack of the Killer Tomatoes; Axe; Batman-Mystery of the Batwoman; The Bette Davis Celebration Collection; Black Sheep; Bloody Pit of Horror; Bottom Feeder; Cemetery Man, Countess Dracula / The Vampire Lovers; Critters; Dagon; Dan Curtis’ Dracula; Day of the Nightmare / Scream of the Butterfly; Doctor Who: The Brain of Morbius;  Doctor Who: The Invisible Enemy; Dracula; Drive-In Cult Classics 8 Movie Set; Evil Dead II; Fox Horror Classics Collection II; Frankenstein; Fright Night; From Beyond; From Beyond the Grave; Ghoulies IV; Gremlins 2; Hammer Horror Series; Horror 250 Movie Pack (!); Killer Klowns from Outer Space; Kiss Me Quick / House on Bare Mountain; Kraken-Tentacles of the Deep; Leeches, Link; Little Shop of Horrors; Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere; Night of the Living Dead; Nosferatu; Phantasm III; Phantasm IV; Phantom from 10,000 Leagues / Beast with a 1,000,000 Eyes; Plan 9 from Outer Space; Re-Animator; Scars of Dracula; Seed of Chucky; Session 9, Sextette; Speed Demon; Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight & Bordello of Blood; Tales from the Crypt / Vault of Horror; Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Collection; The Amazing Transplant, The Aztec Mummy Collection; The Beautiful, the Bloody and the Bare / Behind Locked Doors; The Black Cat / The Fat Black Pussycat; The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; The Call of Cthulhu; The Evil Dead; The Fall of the House of Usher / The Pit and the Pendulum; The Hills Have Eyes 2; The Howling IV;  The Mad Butcher; The Masque of Red Death / The Premature Burial; The Monster that Challenged the World / It! The Terror from Beyond Space; The Prophesy; The Return of Dracula / The Vampire; The Sarah Jane Adventures 1st Season; The Sixth Sense; The Thing; The Thing from Another World; The Unearthly; The Wicker Man; The Willies (with bonus CD); Wes Craven’s New Nightmare; and Young Frankenstein.

Total take for the month:  About $150.  Best month ever, and by quite a bit. (And likely to remain so.)  Thanks, guys!
