Monster of the Day #3334

Happy New Year!

Another year! Yikes! Now I know how Imhotep felt.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. Watch someting stupid. Our first watch party of 2023 will be next Friday.

  • Gamera977

So here we’ve got a swami who has fallen asleep, a young lady who seems to be nursing a migraine instead of being scared and a ghost who looks more like a whacky standup comedian than an undead abomination from Hell.

Is this lady the same type? Her hair has shifted colour but it seems to be the same hair style.

Anyway, Happy New Years one and all!!! Looking forward to the next watch party!

Because we need a little stupid, right this very moment. We need a little stupid now.

  • Eric Hinkle

If I don’t get to say it later, Happy New Year, everyone!

  • Beckoning Chasm

She seems to be wearing a plastic dress, based on the highlights. And I think she’s telling the ghost who stole Dr. Strange’s cloak, “Hey, my eyes are up here!”

  • Beckoning Chasm

The commandment was to “Watch something stupid.” I watched one, and I’m pretty sure Elvis’ “Harum Scarum” would qualify. I think it’s the first Elvis “Hanna-Barbera” movie.

I just suddenly realized these aren’t the Warren Publishing Eerie comic covers. Apparently these are from an entirely different run by a different company. Eerie, along with Creepy, featured excellent cover art in their day.

I watched Blackenstein and Lord did it stinketh.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Ow. That was at a B-Fest I attended. Painful.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Oh, I figured it out! It’s the ghost of Bobby Bittman! “HOW ARE YA!!! Eh eh eh eh!”

  • Oh my dear god, that specter isn’t just an undead shade, it’s the undead shade of a grotesquely unfunny comedian! Run, lady, Run! Paulie Shore’s Coming for you!

    “Hey buDAY!”

  • Once had a friend running a panel insist that Abby is worse. He is wrong!

Blackenstein commits the cardinal sin of being *boring*. Nothing is boring about William Marshall carrying out a Disco Exorcism.

Now I’ll have to decide for myself.

  • Just be aware that the available DVDs are all from a pretty low-quality and badly color-faded 16 mm print that appears to be the only one available. And we are likely lucky to have that. Due to a lawsuit from Warner Bros. for possible copyright infringement on The Exorcist, it is possible (but not known for certain) that the negative and all theatrical prints were destroyed.

It’s not unlikely that AIP could have won the case (Abby is far from the most blatant of the Exorcist rip-offs homages) but director Girdler died while the litigation was ongoing. Now nobody knows who owns the film elements, if they even exist, or (if they do) if Warner’s preliminary injunction on distribution is still in legal effect.

It is one of those films that I really hope a decent 35 mm print will turn up of and get a loving Vinegar Syndrome restoration for Blu-Ray. I want to see those hideous 70’s men’s fashions in all their eyebleeding Technicolor glory. Hey, a girl can dream.

  • Sadly, I saw on TCMs list of actors we lost this year, that Carol Speed passed away.

  • Ken_Begg

We did a run of Warren Eerie covers years and years ago (who thought I’d stretch this bit out so long), and you’re right, all the Warren books had some amazing covers.

  • Ken_Begg

It’s true. In the next panel he’s answering a huge telephone.

  • Ken_Begg

Remember when Data tried to understand humor by watching Joe Piscopo? Yeah, like that.

  • Gamera977

Could be worse Ken, what if it’d been Whoppi Goldberg?????

  • Ken_Begg

Wow, talk about a Hobson’s Choice!!

  • Eric Hinkle

William Marshall could’ve spent two hours reading a phone book and it would have been more entertaining than some films.
