Monster of the Day #3247

Another cultural artifact that will pass with our generation is the work of Basil Gogos. Man, that’s such great stuff. If you’re looking for somewhat to put on your Christmas wish list, a books of Gogos art work would certainly not go amiss.

I wonder if we’ll live long enough for monsters to come back into vogue. I’m not sure. They’ve over humanized and romanticized monsters like vampires too much, and CGI monsters just aren’t relatable like the ones played by Karloff and Lugosi and Lee and so on. I hope I’m wrong, though.

I think the problem is that marketing has basically smoothed everything down so it’s all at the same level. Every movie poster from the last ten years or so is all the same image, the same color palette, the same arrangement of forms. Few want to appeal to a particular audience, they all want the widest net possible–which generally means no sharp edges, no individuality, lots of dullness.
