Monster of the Day #3244

Who doesn’t love Dr. Phibes, the only monster in Vincent Price’s catalogue? I first saw it as a kid at the drive-in. Ah, those were the days. And I showed it at T-Fest a few years ago, unsurprisingly to the delight of my fellow attendees.

Envy me, mortals! To my great delight, my friend Matt will be showing The Abominable Dr. Phibes at the beautiful, historic Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge, a theater I grew up in. And it’s got a huge screen. It will be showing Wednesday Oct 26th. I can’t wait.

  • Vincent plays an actual vampire in Monster Club. I think he puts the bite on John Carridine, but I’ve only seen the last third of the flick so I don’t know.

    Playing an Invisible Man might count as a monster, even though Vincent is a good guy.

    This baby, though, is a classic.

  • Monster Club is such an odd duck, even for a Subotsky (but not Amicus) anthology film. The stories are all very atmospheric and pretty slow burn, despite their short lengths. But the framing story is batshit. Entertaining in its own right, but tonally unrelated to the rest, and the low budget really hurts the club scenes far more than the stories. Its reach exceeded its grasp perhaps, they certainly tried to shoehorn in as much monster action as they could.

    Yeah, I love this film. I’ve never seen it on the big screen either.

    Ah! I missed that. I live in the Northeast and it’s so blasted hot right now (no AC either). I think I’m running on maybe three hours of sleep a night if I’m lucky. Feeling kind of messed up at the moment. Sorry.

    Just remember, “Monster Club” is not the same movie as “Monster Squad.” :-)
